Book a stay on Richard Branson’s private island for 750,000 Virgin points

One of the highlights of Greg the Frequent Miler’s worldwide travels was when he earned 1.2 million Virgin points in order to book a week on Richard Branson’s private island, Necker Island, during which he got to hang out with Sir Virgin himself.

Since Greg’s trip, Necker Island redemptions went away, came back again and now cost a whopping 2 million Virgin points for a week. Even when you’re paying with funny money, that’s a chunk of change. However, for the first time that I’ve seen, Virgin is now offering customers a lower rate for a shorter, three-night stay: 750,000 points.

Factor in a 30% transfer bonus from Chase Ultimate Rewards, and the price goes down to a “bargain” 576,924 points.

• A minimum three-night stay applies to all bookings. The minimum three-night stay must be redeemed entirely using Virgin Points and cannot be combined with paid nights. Quick Thoughts

250K points per night is only ~10% less than the 2-million-per-week rate that Virgin has been charging for the last few years. The novelty here is that you don’t have to commit to the full week; instead, you can just get a taste of how the other 0.00001% lives for a trifling 750,000 points.

I know what you’re thinking: Is Necker Island really worth all that bling? Back in the halcyon days of 2016, when Greg made his foray into the heart of the Virgin empire for a mere 1.2 million points, his answer was an unequivocal “yes.” Not everyone agrees, though. A couple of years ago, a Head for Points contributor paid $8,000/night to check out the island and called it “a piss-up that offers no more than a budget holiday to Spain.”

Greg felt compelled to defend Necker’s besmirched honor in a response post that’s well worth the read, concluding that, “It’s hard to make a case for Necker Island unless you’re extremely cash or points wealthy. On the other hand, for us at least, it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience that was well worth the cost.”
