Confirmed: Discover It cashback & miles can’t be transferred to Capital One miles – for now at least

Update: My wife only has a Discover It card that earns cashback and as the original post below details, Discover Cashback Bonus can’t—currently—be moved to a Capital One miles-earning card.

However, MVC shared in the comments below that if you have a Discover It Miles card that those miles do get displayed alongside your Capital One miles as a total combined balance. However, right now it doesn’t seem like there’s the ability to actually combine Discover It Miles with Capital One miles.

Original post follows.

Some Discover cardholders had their credit card(s) moved to Capital One yesterday. My wife was one of those customers and the transition was incredibly easy.

Based on the information provided before they started moving over accounts, it didn’t sound like it would be possible to convert Discover Cashback Bonus earnings to Capital One miles if you have any miles-earning Capital One cards, although I don’t believe it had been explicitly ruled out.

Now that Shae’s account has been moved over, I can confirm: Discover Cashback Bonus can’t be converted to Capital One miles, for now at least.

Discover Capital One transfer

When logging in to her Capital One account in their app yesterday, it immediately displayed a screen advising that her Discover It card had been linked to her Capital One username. Ahead of the transition there hadn’t been any request to link her Discover and Capital One accounts, so this was presumably done based on things like her name, date of birth, and Social Security Number.

After confirming her contact details, the Capital One app confirmed that she’s already activated her 5% categories for July through September, along with her rewards balance.

After that, the main home screen displayed her Discover It card along with her two Venture X cards.

The thing I was most interested in verifying was whether the cashback from her Discover card could be transferred to one of her Venture X cards. In case you weren’t aware, if you have at least one Capital One card that earns cashback and one that earns miles, you can transfer your cashback earnings to the miles card which results in you being able to effectively convert your cashback into miles or points with any of Capital One’s transfer partners.

After clicking the ‘Rewards’ tab at the bottom and selecting her Discover card, it displayed the following redemption options which unfortunately didn’t include a ‘Combine Rewards’ option.

Discover Capital One redemption options

For what it’s worth, this is what it looks like (on desktop rather than in the app) when you have Capital One cards that earn cashback and miles. As you can see, in that situation there’s a redemption option listed as ‘Combine Rewards’ that allows you to transfer rewards from one Capital One account to another.

Capital One combine rewards cashback miles

I’m still hopeful that once Capital One has fully integrated Discover cardholders that it’ll eventually become possible to combine Discover Cashback Bonus with Capital One miles, but for now at least it’s definitely not an option.

If you’re someone whose Discover card has already been migrated over, or it’s due to be soon, keep an eye out for targeted offers. Doctor of Credit reports that some cardholders are being targeted with an offer to earn $45 bonus cashback if you install either the iPhone app or the desktop browser extension. That’s an easy win which is well worth taking if you’re targeted.

Any idea if we can product change a Discover to a Cap 1? I’d love to get the Savor card.

MVC

The Discover IT Miles card does convert Discover Miles to Capital One Miles; my miles balance transferred over no issues yesterday.

I will say there doesn’t seem to be an opportunity to use them a C1 miles yet, but it does show a “Total Miles” balance of both miles combined.

I had the same idea when I checked yesterday. I’m gunna wait for my second Discover It CC to move over to Capital One and give them some time to release the convert cash back to miles feature (hoping it happens in the near future).
