A reader reached out to alert us to the fact that Iberia Plus has released a lot of business class award availability between New York and Miami to/from Madrid, including during peak summertime dates in 2022. We’re seeing lots of dates with seats for 2 adults — sometimes even on more than one flight per day.
The Deal
- Iberia has released plentiful award space in business class between New York / Miami and Madrid in 2022. We’re seeing both peak summertime dates and off-peak fall fates with availability for 2 passengers
- From New York, Iberia charges 50K Avios each way in business class during peak dates or 34K Avios each way in business class during off-peak dates
- From Miami, Iberia charges 62.5K Avios each way in business class during peak dates or 42.5K Avios each way in business class during off-peak dates
Quick Thoughts
Iberia Plus uses a distance-based award chart and awards on partners like American Airlines are completely inflexible (can’t be changed / cancelled / redeposited), so you really only want to book on Iberia metal and the best deals will be nonstop to/from Madrid.
Iberia also uses a peak and off-peak calendar, so pricing differs depending on dates. Between New York or Miami and Madrid, expect to pay 34,000 Avios each way in business class during off-peak dates or 50,000 Avios each way during peak dates from New York (or 42.5K / 62.5K from Miami). Surcharges are reasonable — around $250 round trip as I recall. And in my opinion, the business class product was perfectly reasonable for a transatlantic flight, with comfortable enough flat bed seats.
Again, we’re seeing a lot of dates with two seats. I found two seats in business class from New York to Madrid on the majority of dates in July for instance (at 50K one way). Sometimes there are even two seats on both of the flights out of JFK as seen here.
There is also a good amount of availability during off-peak dates. For instance, some dates in September also have two seats on both JFK flights at 34K each way.
Overall, this is an excellent deal. Keep in mind that in a normal world, you can transfer British Airways Avios to Iberia Plus, but I believe that functionality has been down on the site since British Airways began some longer-than-anticipated maintenance. Still, with many programs transferring to Iberia Plus, it should be relatively easy to put together the Avios for this. For more Avios sweet spots, see: Avios sweet spots for award tickets.
