Use fuel rewards on groceries at Giant (coming soon)

Giant Foods has announced that they will expand what was a pilot program to allow customers to use rewards points on groceries. While you won’t get quite as much value out of this as you would when using them for fuel points, but if you tend to earn more fuel points than you can use, this could be good news. The press release says that they will launch a marketing campaign for this in 2020, so it won’t be happening immediately — but it’s still good news.

You currently earn 1 point per $1 spent at Giant. Every 100 points gets you $0.10 off per gallon of gas up to 25 gallons. If you were to max that out on 25 gallons, you would get $2.50 in value out of 100 points. When used towards groceries, you’ll get $0.01 per point — so 100 points will get you $1 off your groceries. You’d therefore be better off using your fuel points towards fuel when possible (as long as you’re filling up more than 10 gallons of gas, you’ll save more money that way). However, if you don’t ordinarily fill up enough to use all of your fuel points, this will be a nice alternative. It amounts to a 1% return. When they run a promo awarding bonus points, it could be even better. When you stack with credit card rewards, it’ll be a nice little bonus.

Doctor of Credit notes that the type of products on which you can use the points may be restricted, and which purchases earn fuel points can vary some. It’s not entirely clear from the press release how they will implement this, though I expect it’ll likely be a win for those who can take advantage.

I’m not sure whether or not this will get expanded to other brands like Stop & Shop and Martin’s, but I hope it does. See the full press release here.
