Wells Fargo Attune card no longer accepting new applicants

15

Almost two years ago to the week, Wells Fargo released a new cash back credit card called the Attune World Elite Mastercard. The card was quite an oddball, with an array of 4x categories that weren’t bonused via most other cards, like Disney World tickets, dance classes, marinas, campgrounds, tourist attractions, barbershops, and a lot more.

A couple of days ago, Wells Fargo stopped accepting new applications for the Attune card, as part of its “ongoing approach to refine our product offerings and deliver strong customer value.”

However, there is a silver lining. Wells Fargo has told us that benefits will remain unchanged for current cardholders, and it doesn’t plan to transition anyone to another product. This should allow current fans to continue to enjoy the boosted earnings on the quirky smörgåsbord of bonus categories the card offers.

Eulogy

When the Attune was first released, we thought it was a bit of a snoozer. It featured a tiny modest welcome bonus, and the headline bonus category was “4% back on self-care”, calling out “gym, fitness, and wellness purchases” for that category. It seemed nice for folks with a pricey gym membership, but it didn’t seem very broad.

However, when we dug in a bit, we found quite a few categories that might command a lot of spending for some folks that would usually go unbonused. While those will again go untended, the good news is that those folks who found an answer in the Attune card can still go forth and conquer, as it sounds like existing cards will be allowed to remain in their current form indefinitely.

RIP Attune, we never knew ye. As a final tribute, and for posterity’s sake, here’s the full list of 4x categories that the card offered:

Oh no, just when I got ready to launch my super yacht…

Jimmy

Weird as this card was, it was something unique for WF. Unless they add transfer partners or figure out some other way to stand out it is hard to see them as much of a competitor, especially given that they don’t have the greatest reputation to start with.

Grant

Have you been under a rock? Wells Fargo has transfer partners.

Jimmy

Yes, of course. Just not very many.

Lee

Add Air Canada, Emirates, and Singapore at the very least to be competitive

SDB

It is still possible to get the card over the phone, although the wells system doesn’t give the option, you have to get through the automated system and through to a representative who knows what they’re doing, and they can put in an application for you over the phone

Big Jeff

I couldn’t get a rep able/willing to make the application after three calls. 🙁

SDB

you called credit services?
they may have stopped taking applications for it by now…

M.m

Anything that has good multipliers is getting nerfed right now.

MAX CADY

Thanks TIM, you are the only reason I still read FM daily!

What about product changing to it?

As soon as I heard about this I called to try to product change my Autograph to the Attune card, but no luck. The issue, though, was that my Autograph card wasn’t eligible for any product changes. It might be possible to product change from a WF cash back card to Attune. I’m hoping someone will try it and report back!

mthomasdo

I just checked with the Premier Banking desk trying to change either my Autograph or my legacy Wells Advisors Visa Signature card to an Attune. “No soup for you”

Whitney

DP: I checked the product change options online for my old WF Active Cash and Attune was not an option (only Autograph was), but admittedly I did not bother to try calling
