Best uses

  • Save money on low category off-peak hotels. Hyatt off-peak award rates will start at 3,500 points per night when that pricing debuts next year.  At 1.8 cents per point, you can book these properties for $63 per night.
  • Stay at top tier properties for less. Most of Hyatt’s top tier properties top out at 30,000 points per night. At 1.8 cents per point, you can book these properties for $540 per night.  That can be a bargain given that some regularly cost over $1,000 per night (like the Ventana Big Sur, which is now all-inclusive). Some specialty properties top out at 40,000 points per night.  At 1.8 cents per point, these can be booked for $720 per night.

Things to know

  • When you book nights with points, you will not earn points for the stay unless Hyatt is running a promotion which offers bonus points on both paid and award stays.
  • Most hotel taxes are not charged on award stays, so this can make the value of buying points even better.  Arguably, this factor and the one above roughly cancel each other out.
  • Resort and destination fees are waived on award stays. This alone can make it worthwhile to use points instead of cash for your bookings.

Great Value Example

We mentioned above that buying points could be good value in the future when redeeming for off-peak stays at low category hotels. Even though off-peak pricing hasn’t been implemented yet, redeeming points for low category properties can still provide outstanding value versus cash rates, especially if you’re booking a stay during a special event.

For example, the Hyatt Place Albuquerque/Uptown is located within walking distance of a Park & Ride station for the International Balloon Fiesta in October. It’s a category 1 property which means it only costs 5,000 points per night.

Hyatt Place Albuquerque Uptown - points

Booking a paid stay for four nights during the International Balloon Fiesta would cost $377.55 per night with tax.

Hyatt Place Albuquerque Uptown - cash

Instead of that $377.55 per night expense, you could buy Hyatt points with this latest promotion and only have to pay $90 per night for each set of 5,000 points you’d need. If staying four nights, that would save you $1,150.20.
