Tips
3/12 Rule: Difficult to get approved if you’ve opened 3 or more cards with any bank in past 12 months (7 cards in 12 months for those with deposit accounts) To get same card again, some cards require waiting 24 months from opening. Others require waiting 24 months from closing. Consumer card applications: Limit 2 per rolling 2 months, 3 per rolling 12 months, and 4 per rolling 24 months. Hard inquiries are usually combined into 1 when initiated within 30 days but there have been reports of TransUnion not combining. YMMV. BOA appears to be enforcing a 5 personal card limit

Recent better offer: Expired 3/31/23: 250K Miles after $50K in spend.
FM Mini Review: Similar to the Venture X consumer card, the business version offers annual rebates that easily mitigate the fee for those who travel often and could be worth it for the lounge access and travel protections given the cost/benefit ratio. Unlike the Venture X, free authorized users do not get Priority Pass access. The card earns 2 "miles" per dollar on most purchases just like the Capital One Venture X Rewards card, which are worth exactly 1 cent each toward travel. This makes the return on most spend similar to a 2% cash back card (though in this case you must redeem your miles to offset travel in order to get 1 cent per mile). One big advantage over cash back: Capital One allows transfering their "miles" to airline miles & hotel points.

Must wait 24 months after previous bonus to signup for same card. Sapphire cards require 48 months. No wait required for Ink cards. Better offers may be available. Under very rare circumstances, signing up for new Chase cards can lead to Chase reviewing your accounts. $1,000 Cash Back
$1K after $10K Spend in 3 Months
$195 Annual Fee
FM Mini Review: This is an almost 1 to 1 copy of Capital One's Spark Cash Plus card, but the Chase card throws in 2.5% earnings on very large purchases. Unfortunately, the Chase card also has a slightly higher annual fee. The biggest disappointment about this card is that, unlike other Chase Ink cards, the rewards cannot be moved to other Chase cards to improve their value. Even though this card technically earns Ultimate Rewards points, it's best to think of it as a straight up cash back card.
Earning rate: 2.5% cash back on purchases of $5,000 or more ⚬ 5% back on travel purchased through Chase Ultimate Rewards ⚬ 2% cash back on all other spend

This card is subject to Chase's 5/24 rule (click here for details). Even though this card is marketed as a cash back card, it actually earns Ultimate Rewards points which are redeemable for 1 cent each, or can be combined with other Ultimate Rewards-earning cards to get even more value. This product is available to you if you do not have this card and have not received a new cardmember bonus for this card in the past 24 months.
FM Mini Review: This card could be worth it for the welcome bonus and intro APR when offered, but since it offers no ongoing rewards it is a poor choice for ongoing spend.
Earning rate: This card does not earn ongoing rewards beyond the welcome bonus.

FM Mini Review: Good cash back card for everyday spend as long as you do not spend more than $20K per billing cycle (at which point a 2% card would be better). Lack of foreign transaction fees is a positive.
Earning rate: Tier One Rewards (which now requires $1,000 in an Alliant high-yield checking account and 2 electronic transactions per month) offers 2.5% cash back everywhere on up to $10K per billing cycle, then unlimited 1.5% cash back beyond $10K in purchases in a billing cycle. FM Mini Review: This card could be a good option for someone looking for a 2% cash back Mastercard, though keep in mind that the Citi DoubleCash is a competitor that earns at the same rate while offering points which could become transferable to airline partners, whereas the SoFi credit card only earns cash back rewards.

FM Mini Review: Although this is marketed as a travel card, it's really cashback, since the rewards can be used for travel, a statement credit or an ACH transfer at the same rate. 3% back on dining, travel and gas is pretty good for a no annual-fee card, especially with no foreign transaction fees.

FM Mini Review: While the headline is 3% back for a year, the bonus itself is an extra 1.5% back on up to $20K in purchases for the first year. That's certainly not a bad return on otherwise unbonused spend, but many other cards on the market that offer even moderately good welcome bonuses offer greater net return with significantly less spend.

KLM is 50k, not 70k

I currently have the old IGH Rewards Club card $49 annual fee. Will I get bonus if I apply Chase IHG Rewards Premier Business? On the chase website, it says 140K points, but on your website it says 165K points $3K spend in 3 months. Which one is correct?

Mike Chicago

WF Autograph now 20K, down from 30K. This could be a temporary drop to discourage new apps while WF force converts Propels to Autographs over the next few months.

Mike Chicago

FYI I noticed a few days ago that a couple of the US Bank cards disappeared from this list, namely the Altitude Go and the Business Triple Cash. I doubt this was intentional, hope not because I use this list as a reference sheet. Also not sure whether any other cards have disappeared.

Greg The Frequent Miler

Thanks for this. We can’t figure out why they disappeared either, but we were able to put them back. Really appreciate the heads up!

Is it possible to search to find a comment you made? I posted something about Chase credit cards…..wanted to check to see if a reply was made….can’t remember the article. Do you have way that I see what I posted? Thanks…..Good job on the web site. Enjoy your articles.

Wyndham Rewards Earner Business Card – BEWARE.
I have met the $2,000 spend requirement and received my second statement but no 65,000 point bonus, so I called Barclays. They confirmed that I have met the spend requirement but said the terms and conditions (the agent actually called it the small print) state that after meeting the spending requirement then I must wait 8 to 12 weeks for the bonus!!

What a pathetic bank.

Ying

I have met $2000 spend requirement, but Barclays said there is no welcome bonus associated with my application. Not sure how that happened.

Frank

I have 7 Priority Pass cards at present, not including P2’s (don’t ask me how or why – ask the credit card issuers (one in particular). Which one is better than the other or are they all the same?

Greg The Frequent Miler

Any from Amex are inferior because they don’t cover restaurants.
Most others are the same and allow 2 guests
The one from the Ritz card theoretically allows unlimited guests

Frank

Just got the new IHG Business card and I can confirm that it is definitely subject to 5/24.

Greg The Frequent Miler

Congrats on getting approved. How did your experience prove 5/24 was in effect? Did you have to call recon?

Frank

Yes. I had to call and the first agent said I was 5/24 and I said I wasn’t because one of the cards showed me as an AU on my wife’s card. She said she couldn’t see that but would pass me on to a different agent. This agent was the actual one that approves or not and she looked it up and said she only saw 4 cards, not 5 and approved me.

Steven

Hi, just a suggestion. It would be helpful to create views to filter by rewards programs (i.e. AA, United, Marriott etc) or Airline alliances (i.e. One World, Star Alliances etc), this was it’ll be easier to someone to find an offer based on which rewards currency they need without knowing which bank issues the credit card. It looks like it’s grouped by banks now, again which is fine for someone who know who are issuers are for all the rewards program out there.

Greg The Frequent Miler

That’s a great idea. It’s difficult to do with the way we built this page, though. I’ll have to think about whether we can do something like that either here or on another page.

David

On the Chase Website, I see the Freedom Flex and Freedom Unlimited both having a 20k bonus for a $500 spend in the first 3 months. Would this bring the Freedom Unlimited to a similar 1st year value of the Freedom Flex? The current values I see are ($570 — Flex) and ($300 — Unlimited)

Daniel R

Barclays is a comical joke. Data points: 815 TU, zero lates, 8 yrs credit history, 8 open credit cards, 2 in the last year, 1 inquiry in the past 2 yrs. Applied for the JetBlue Biz card, automatically DENIED. Called and spoke to recon analyst. They need 2 yrs tax returns and P&L. Wow! Was I applying for a mortgage with them or a credit card? Not happy as I now have a hard inquiry on my TU credit report for 2 yrs. Has anyone ever gotten approved with them?

Ed. C

To answer your last question, yes. I have Barclay Aviator Silver, Barclay Aviator Business (just approved last month} and JetBlue card. No issues at all getting any of them.

george

I noticed that you have listed a 75k offer for the Hyatt business card. Is that a current offer?
Also where on your site can I find info for reaching to Globalist status on the card thru spend? Thank you

Chase Sapphire Preferred 80K SUB through referral is here 🙂

Where is the link that used to advise people how to get to 500K or million points and what cards to get?

Benn

It seems like there’s a $3,500 Cap1 Spark offer through a BRM.

JOSE

Thanks for this valuable resource. I find it a great place to start. Can FM share how the 1st year values are calculated? I would love to have a spreadsheet for each offer to tweak my own expected points/miles redemption values, my own valuation of any credits/perks and and to calculate my particular ancillary costs associated with spend above my normal spend in order to predict each offers first year value specific to my circumstances.

Nick Reyes

If you hover over the “i” in the circle next to the first year estimation, it says something like “click here for details about how we calculate first year value”. That brings you to this page with more detail:

BOA Amtrak offer is dead fyi

Fixed. Thanks!

Troy

My go-to resource for years, thanks for constantly improving it!
Couple minor clean-ups: the Amazon Prime Rewards Visa should be under personal instead of business, and also the US Bank Triple Cash link goes to a 404 page not found.
Thanks again,

Thank you! I’ve fixed these issues. I really appreciate it!

Capital One Venture X speculation.

I noticed on the VRBO website that some hotels advertise there.

Makes me wonder if it would be possible to use the $200 Vacation Rental Credit by booking a couple days through VRBO to get the credit. Then booking directly with the hotel for another few days to get the $300 travel credit. Then calling the hotel to tie 2 reservations together.

Does that sound plausible?

Paul davis

You have the Marriott as only worth seven dollars. With three 3. 50,000 point nights at bonvoy properties don’t see how you do the math. I figure each of those certificates will save me at least $500 a night.

Mike Chicago

The WF Visa Signature link now points to their new Active Cash card, which appears to also be a “Visa Signature”, but it does not have the 5X for 6 months on 12.5K of G/G/D nor the 1.5 cents on flights redemption option. I can’t find the old Visa Signature on their website either.

Same with the Rewards Visa.

Has anyone tried calling Chase to waive the annual fee and/or extend the annual free night voucher? I had originally schedule my voucher last yr but then had to cancel bc of the lockdown. Chase then extended the expiration date until 12/31/2021. I have a young child which is still not allowed to get a covid vaccine so we’re unable to travel. My annual fee is now due and I called asking for a waiver or at least an extension of my current voucher but Chase says no. Wondering if anyone else had better luck.

Greg The Frequent Miler

Which Chase card are you referring to?

Aaron Sturgill

I got told during Platinum for Schwab application that I wasn’t eligible for welcome offer. I currently have the regular platinum (~12 months old)… the gold (~6 months old)… and a few older Hilton surpass cards. I’ve not cancelled any Amex cards (yet. Any reason why not eligible? (I am a schwab client)

Unfortunately, nobody really knows for sure what causes the algorithm to decide that there’s no soup for you. Anecdotally, putting spend on your existing Amex cards seems to help. So if you’ve not put any spend on some of your cards for a while, try sprinkling in some spend on each of them for a month or two and try again.

Trevor

Anyone have a working Bank of America phone number to followup with a denied BOA Alaska Airlines Personal card?

The number listed above isn’t working, and it’s very frustrating trying to speak to a human agent.

KikiTravels

I wish you’d remove the Capital One links or at least have a warningwith a link to your difficulties with them.

Paul davis

I disagree with your valuation on the mariott boundless. $7? 3 free nights @ 50k point properties is worth $1200 or more to me.

Frank

A word of caution on Barclays cards:
Today I got a call about a missed payment from Barclays on a credit card. I have never missed a payment in 40 years. It turns out that the amount was deducted from my Chase Bank account for the Bill pay” I made but the payment was not received by Barclays. After looking into this I see that Chase just sends the checks by mail (USPS), not electronically. Barclays says the didn’t receive it and Chase says they sent it. So, in future I have to wait at least a week and then check to see that Barclays actually shows the amount as paid.

I know the address was correct because 2 previous bill pay amounts went through and so it was not an error on my part. I had some words with Chase who claimed there were only 2 possibilities: either the USPS lost the check or Barclays lost it. When I pointed out that there was a third possibility where someone at Chase dropped it in the gutter on the way to the mailbox or put it in the trash by mistake, they were offended.

Most likely the check will turn up in a month or two but I have now voided it. Barclays was good enough to reverse the late fee and interest charge (or at least said they would) when I paid them on the phone. I will check to make sure everyone does what they said they would do, but it does go to show that one has to be careful with payments to Barclays as it’s not an electronic payment.

It could have been much more awkward if Barclays decided to claw back the bonus miles for non-payment.

130KAMEX

Can you pl add the referral link for the 130K AMEX Platinum card?

Greg The Frequent Miler

There isn’t a fixed link that will show you that everytime. Instead, bring up our link in different clean browser windows and with various devices until it shows you the 130K offer when you click through.

  1. From different clean browsers…
  2. Go to this page (which shows the 100K offer): https://frequentmiler.com/amxplatbiz/#Goto
  3. Click through to the offer to see if you get the 130K landing page.
  4. Keep trying different devices and different browsers.
Frank

New language I’ve never seen before on a Chase application in February:

You must keep the card open for at least 6 months or you may lose your bonus miles.

Have you ever seem that before? Sounding more like Amex to me.

Greg The Frequent Miler

Interesting. No, I haven’t seen or noticed that before.

Frank

I have been offered by an email from AMEX to “apply for an upgrade” from my Everyday card (no-fee) to the Everyday Preferred card ($95) fee and get 40,000 points after $2K spend in 3 months. I ahve hardly every used the card I have.

This seems like a reasonable offer – BUT will they do a credit pull?

Nick Reyes

That’s not just “reasonable”, it’s FANTASTIC in my opinion. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a new cardmember bonus on that card of more than 30K. We reported the 40K upgrade offer recently. Totally worth it in my opinion as it beats the offer you’d get applying new and you don’t use up a 5/24 slot.

Nobody can tell you for sure whether or not Amex will pull your credit, but anecdotally I don’t think I’ve heard a single report of an existing cardholders getting hard pulled even for a new Amex card application in years. In other words, existing cardholders typically aren’t getting a hard pull even for a new card application with Amex, never mind an upgrade offer. So while it’s not impossible that they’ll hard pull, it is more likely that it’ll just be a soft pull – and either way, I think the importance of pulls has long been overblown. While a letter may say “too many inquiries” as a reason for denial, it’s like a “it’s not you it’s me” breakup letter. It’s just a reason, but necessarily the real reason.

Frank

Sorry, I didn’t mean a credit pull – I meant will it add to my 5/24 count?
The offer came with specific codes and I have Platinum personal and business card, so they should know me.

Frank

In other words, will it show up as a new card on my credit score/report?

Nick Reyes

No, an upgrade with Amex does not add a new account.

Nick Reyes

No, an upgrade won’t add to your 5/24 count.

Frank

Thanks, Nick – I do appreciate your advice. I will give it a go (in a month or so as I have some hefty spending to do right now on … other cards). Covid may have put a damper on my planned travel for the last year but it has done wonders for my/our miles and points (P1+P2). Firstly we haven’t spent any miles or points and we have gained more than any other 12 month period to date, mostly transferable points – I am frightened to say how many. And we have Hyatt Globalist for the first time (until Feb 2023) and Marriott Platinum should arrive any day now (until Feb 2022). And we now have a grand total of exactly 51 free njghts, mostly lower-end (Marriott Cat-4 and 5, Hyatt Cat 1-4, Radissons in US, IHG mid-tier and even a Hilton) and some expiring by end of July (yes, I’m looking at you Marriott and Radisson) but in all we lost only 1 night that expired so far. Even better we will both be vaccinated with 2nd dose in a week.

And what has all this done to our credit scores? Never better!

I have Frequent Miler to thank in large part because in the old days I had to look at many blogs every day or so, but now I look only at yours because you cover whatever the others do anyway, and much clearer and with less pushing for sign-ups for your fees. The only other blog I read often is Doctor of Credit who gives me enough on Bank and Investment account bonus advice to more than pay for all my annual fees on the zillion cards I have.

Perhaps we will meet one day and I’ll buy the drinks!

Frank

Hi Greg, above you say:

“Amex is now the safest bank for trying your luck at a new welcome bonus. They don’t usually issue a hard pull when denying your application. Plus, they’ll now warn you during the application process if you’re not eligible for the bonus.”

Is that for Business cards as well?

Greg The Frequent Miler

Yep

Frank

Thanks. I love your blog. And your quick responses.

Frank

I’m thinking of going for the AMEX Bonvoy Business card even though I have had the SPG Business card in the past (closed in 2015). I may not get the 125K bonus and I will definitely not be able to use the $150 credits, but I am looking for an easy Platinum status. I have 3 x 7-week packages and 9 separate 35K certificates to use which adds up to a whole month of Marriott free nights. And this card gets an extra night on each anniversary. The only things is that one 7-night package and all 9 x 1 night certificates expire on the new date of 8/1/2021 and I am likely to not yet be traveling. I think I will be ready for travel in November when my other 2 weeks are set to expire.

I see this AMEX offer expires on 1/13/2021 so I am having a dilemma: should I just go for it now or wait in case the offer is extended. What would you do in this situation, Greg, Platinum for 1 year (plus 1 free 35K night) for $125? Or, what is the likelihood of AMEX extending the offer or is there any other cheap way to get Marriott Platinum status?

If I were traveling at present I would not hesitate, but I don’t see a vaccine for myself for at least 6 to 8 months.

Greg The Frequent Miler

If you go for it now, I think that you’ll get a popup if you’re likely not to get the points. So it should be safe to try it.

After Jan 13, we don’t know what will happen. The usual offers in the past never included elite status so I’d expect it to go back to that. On the other hand, it’s certainly possible that they’ll either extend this offer or offer something similar later in 2021. No guarantee.

My advice: go for it now. If you get the pop-up then stop. Otherwise, go forward and earn the points and status for a year.

Frank

And of course AMEX may even give me the 100K points – if they think 5 years is a lifetime …

Frank

One more question on this card:
Above you say the offer ia valid until 1/13/2021. Assuming this card will still be offered, what would be lost in the offer if it reverts to whatever it used to be?

Is it the number of points or the Platinum status? The latter is what I am looking for.

Greg The Frequent Miler

It’s very likely that Platinum status won’t be offered. Also the number of points may go down.

Frank

Thank you.

euromannn

GOLD AMEX card has random rejection on SUB if p[aying taxes. Works for many not all. I just paid PayPal linked aChase INK CIC for county taxes—it’s pending. SO not sure if AMEX is card dependent problems, submittal process but I’m testing Chase/paypal combo. Good part my county charges 2.35% fees if using a CC but PP seems to allow this so far. Next worry point will I get SUB credit on a $6700 county tax payment. Thanks for your blog….lots of time helping posters.

Tom

It was much more helpful when there was a separate page for the Business cards. Definitely not as useful now that they are mixed in with personal cards.

Greg The Frequent Miler

That separate business card page is still there. I added back the link to that page so that it’s easier to find.

Frank

Looking for some advice:

I have about 16,000 FlexPoints and a card that still earns these points up for renewal. Is it worth the $49 to renew? Or should I just cut my losses and dump the card? I have had some use out of it in the past.

I would need to earn 4,000 points to get to 20,000 and be able to get up to $400 in airline tickets – or is it now $300? That would be $2,000 spend if in a category such as groceries or $4,000 in general spend or some mixture.

Any suggestions?

Frank

I see I can convert my points to $150 cash back. Looks like the best option to get rid of these points. In what form would the cashback be? I wouldn’t want a credit on my card.

Greg The Frequent Miler

Points are worth a flat 1.5 cents each towards travel now. You should be able to cash out though at 1 cent per point. I’m not sure what form that takes but I think that withdrawing to a bank account or sending a check may be an option

Frank

Thanks, Greg, I think I’ll do that. I think $150 now is better than paying another $49 fee and having this conversations again next year! 🙂

Frank

OK< I called and they said it can only come as a credit on the credit card. So, I still went ahead thinking I’d just wait until it shows up on my card then cancel the card and wait for a refund. But when I went to do this online I saw an additional option: deposit the $150 to my US Bank checking account, which I selected and it’s there immediately. Wasted 1000 points but no matter. Now I will close the card and the checking account once I have drained it.

I am in the mode of cleaning up all my credit cards, getting rid of the useless ones.

Thanks.

Jojo

You need to update the Amex BCP. It’s value has significantly increased with the $300 bonus and $95 annual fee waived the first year.

Greg The Frequent Miler

Thanks. Unfortunately the offer you’re referring to doesn’t always show up. That’s why we have a note on the offer that says: “
