Application Tips

Chase Application Tips

  • Shut-Down Caution: Signing up for new Chase cards can lead to Chase reviewing your accounts. This may lead to Chase shutting down all of your accounts if you appear to be a credit risk. See this post for details and recommendations: Why Chase shutdowns have increased and how to avoid them.
  • 5/24 Rule: With most Chase cards, you won't get approved if your credit report shows 5 or more cards opened in the past 24 months. Details here.
  • 24/48 Month Rule: With most Chase cards, you can get the same card and bonus again 24 months after having received the bonus as long as you no longer have the card open. With Sapphire cards, you must wait 48 months. No wait is required for Chase Ink cards.
  • 30 Day Rule: It is tough to get approved for more than 2 Chase cards within 30 days
  • Get Same Card Again: You can get the same exact card and again if you first cancel the older card and follow the 24/48 month rule. Ink cards are OK to get again without cancelling previous card if you apply with a new business.
  • Better Offers: You may be able to get a better offer than the best available public offer. Details here.
  • Hard inquiries combine into 1 when approved same day (not always true when mixing business and personal)

How long do the 50k certs last once you get the card?

Brent

When I followed the link the best I saw was 3 X 50K…

Brent

Solved the problem. I had to use an Incognito window. It only gave me 3 X 50K until I did that.

Matthew

I couldn’t resist the 5 night offer. Our favorite staycation resort is rarely over 50k points so even in a worse case scenario we’ll still get good use out of them.

Dave

Can this certificate be use by another person? A relative for instance?

JayP

This link isn’t working (3x 50k night certs). Unless it’s just me.

Greg The Frequent Miler

Fixed. Sorry for the delay!

Miao

Has anyone received the 15 elite nights credit using the new link? I was reading the offer details and did not see the 15 nights elite credit in the terms and conditions.

Kelly

I just tried to apply and it said due to having an AMEX Marriott card, they can not offer me the bonuses. Has anyone had that happen to them?

Carlos

Offer expired just as I was going to apply 🙁

FYI: the marriott apply link seems to be not available any more

Hello, I’ve Amex Marriott Bonvoy ($95) which I applied and received the welcome bonus in October 2018. Then I upgraded that card to Bonvoy Brilliant ($450) in November 2021. No welcome / upgrade bonus.
Today, I tried applying for Chase Marriott boundless ($95) and got a pop up saying I wasn’t eligible for the bonus, since I own the Bonvoy brilliant card.
Is this expected?

I followed the guide “Am I eligible for another Marriott card”, and as per that it looks like I am, since I’ve not received a welcome / upgrade bonus since 10/2018.

Hi there – so i just applied for the Chase Marriott Bonvoy Boundless card today and my card has a Marriott Bonvoy Card from Amex (Previous SPG Card). I was informed before a hard pull that I would not qualify the bonus because I had the Amex card bonus. Is this expected? TIA

[…] Marriott Bonvoy Boundless: This $95 card offers an annual free night certificate for hotels costing up to 35K points; automatic Silver status; and 15 nights of elite credit each year.  Since Amex offers similar Marriott cards, I don’t see this one as a must-have except for one special use: if you really want the Ritz Carlton card, it might be possible to upgrade from the Boundless card once you’ve had it for a year.  Alternatively, it should be possible to downgrade to Chase’s no-fee Marriott Bold card. How long does it take Chase and Marriott to add the bonus points into the account once the spend requirement has been satisfied? I want to use the points for a Points Advance reservation already made.

Nick Reyes

With Chase, you usually get the points after the statement close for the period in which you met the spending requirements. For example, let’s say you met the spending requirements on March 3rd but your statement cuts (generates) on the 26th of the month. In that case, Chase would send over the welcome bonus points with your March 26th statement. It takes a few days after your statement cuts for the points to show up in your Marriott account.

Note that terms always state that it can take something like 8 weeks, but real life experience works the way I’m describing.

Bob

How long does it take for American Express and Marriott to credit the Bonvoy points once the bonus spending requirement is satisfied. Is it different than with Chase that you outlined above?

Thank you for your help

Nick Reyes

Amex welcome bonuses usually post within a few days of reaching the spending requirements. YMMV, of course, but that’s generally the case.
