Quick Thoughts
I can’t help but feel like Amex is messing with me. My wife and I had Google Fi service for many years and were very happy with it. One frustrating aspect of it though came courtesy of Amex.
Early on in the pandemic in 2020, American Express added some generous offers to some of their credit cards giving $10-$20 per month back as statement credits when using eligible cards to pay for wireless service. In theory Google Fi was eligible, but most months the statement credits didn’t post correctly, sometimes using up the $20 streaming credits instead.
Since then, American Express has added a $10 monthly credit to the Business Platinum card for wireless service. Unfortunately that credit is only valid for select cell phone carriers and Google Fi isn’t one of them.
I recently moved our phone service from Google Fi to T-Mobile for a couple of reasons. T-Mobile worked out to be a little cheaper than Google Fi, plus Amex’s generosity with handing out No Lifetime Language Business Platinum cards meant my wife and I were now sitting on a pile of $10 wireless credits that were going unused. By moving to T-Mobile, I’ve been able to make $10 payments on each of those Business Platinum cards every month to pretty much halve our phone bill.
It therefore figures that a couple of months after leaving Google Fi, there’s this new Amex Offer giving $25 back as a statement credit specifically for Google Fi expenditure. Even better (for those who still use Google Fi), this Amex Offer can be used up to three times before its expiry date in September which means you could save $75 during that time. If your P2 has this offer on one of their cards as well, you can hopefully make multiple payments to Google Fi in that time to save a total of $150. While you do that, I’ll be consoling myself with a couple of Boston Kreme donuts from Dunkin’ courtesy of the $2 bonus cards from today’s T-Mobile Tuesdays offer.
One interesting note, the spend appears to be cumulative. The last two Google Fi statements I had combined for about $160 and the credit triggered three times, a $25 credit the first month and then a double $50 credit the second month.
This terms say this is for Android devices only. Has anyone with an iPhone had success with this offer?
No, there is no such wording in the Amex offer. Besides you can pay early the full $50 on your computer to trigger the offer go to pay.google.com, click on subscriptions & services tab
Yep, worked for prepay with my wife’s iPhone. Took almost a week after qualifying transaction to post… I mis-read terms “… via Android devices only…” to mean Android only.
Thanks for the heads-up. I haven’t been adding offers to my card lately so I had to add all of the offers a couple of times to finally get this one to show up.
Tried using the pay early option and it didn’t send the e-mail mentioning that it triggered the AMEX offer.
I guess the pay early charges code differently?
GOOGLE GOOGLE *FI vs GOOGLE *FI
Must be a different MCC code
I have asked the Amex rep via chat and she confirmed the offer was triggered with my early pay, but pending AMEX to process, asked me to check back in 14 days
Credit posted to account !!!
Best international travel phone/data service finally gets some love.
In pay.google.com / subscriptions you can pay any amount early. Would this trigger the amex credit?
The Fi bill does not show up there. My Fi bill just came due for $25.43. If I read the Amex Offer terms correctly, I should get one credit every two months.
It does show there under subscription & services tab. Even Google support provided this as a workaround when they forgot to charge my $20 monthly fee last month.
UPDATE: Credit posted to account !
Switched to Fi when I left T-Mobile (as an employee). This is a nice summer perk!
does any provider offer a phone + plan for $35/month max? i have $40 in monthly credits go unused every month from amex biz plat cards. However, if I not pay anything out of pocket, then would get yet a phone for my younger kids…………
