Update 7/29/20: Kroger has indeed launched a new 4x fuel points promo which works on these gift cards.

Kroger.com is offering 15% off on select prepaid phone cards. I believe that Kroger does not process the charges for these directly, so they likely won’t code as grocery purchases. However, if you have prepaid phone service, these could make for a nice discount.

The Deal

  • Kroger.com is offering a 15% discount on select prepaid wireless service cards from Total Wireless, Cricket, Net10, Simple Mobile, Tracfone, and AT&T Prepaid (in denominations ranging from $50-$100)
  • Direct link to this promotion

Key Details

  • Valid July 27, 2020 to August 9, 2020
  • Maximum discount varies by service provider / card type

Quick Thoughts

While several credit cards offer a bonus category for mobile phone service providers and the Amex Business Platinum credit can be triggered with some service providers also, these prepaid cards could still be a great way to save on future purchases that might eclipse the value of any rewards you get for paying directly (though note that you’ll lose out on cell phone insurance offered by your credit card if you’re not paying your bill with that card).

I used prepaid services for years because I got a better deal and didn’t need blazingly fast cell coverage. Things have changed for me and I’m now on T-Mobile postpaid. However, if I didn’t need the full speed cell coverage for home Internet, I’d certainly be happy to consider going back to prepaid and pairing it with Google Fi for travel.

If you’re in that boat, saving 15% could be a nice deal. Keep in mind that each card has a maximum discount value, which might limit you to buying 1, 2, or 3 cards depending on which you’re buying.

You don’t need to pay taxes/911/local surcharges by using VGC/MCGC with DE/MT address.
The other way is to enter DE/MT (maybe some other states) zip code at your credit card billing address. Apparently, GCM doesn’t verify zip code and determines taxes basing on zip code.
