Citi Application Rules
- 48 Month Rule: With most Citi cards, you can only receive a welcome offer every 48 months. This applies to the same exact card, not families of cards and is counted from the date that you receive the welcome offer, not from when you're approved.
- Velocity Limits: Citi allows a maximum of one personal card per 8 days and a maximum of two personal cards per 65 days. Business cards are limited to one per 90 days.
- Card Limits: Citi doesn't have a strict limit on the amount of cards that you can have, but it does place limits on the total amount of credit that they will issue you across all cards. Unfortunately, unlike most banks, Citi does not allow you to move credit from one existing card to the another card.
- Application Status: Call (866) 606-2787 or go here to check your application status. For Costco cards, call (877) 343-4118.
- Reconsideration: If denied, call (800) 695-5171 for personal cards or (866) 541-7657 for business cards.
Hey Greg and Nick, would the FM team consider putting Citi application rules on this page? I noticed for your other cards you have a call out for Application Rules to watch out for … But noticed you don’t have it for AA cards?
Ooh, good idea. Yes we need to add that.
I believe it is spend 3.5k in 4 months instead of 3 months
I’ve been approved for the CitiBusiness AA card. If I book an AA domestic award flight with my BA Avios, will I still get a free luggage check in thanks to the Citi AA CC? If so, will all people in my party can check in luggage for free? We’ll be 4 of us flying. TIA!
Yes, as long as you attach your AA number to the reservation instead of your BA number, everyone on the same reservation (up to 5 people total) should get 1 free checked bag.
Can someone help refresh my memory of Citi rules? Only Citi card I have was a premier card >2 years ago, am I eligible for this one? and by applying this one, does that block me from applying another premier card (been waiting for a good offer on that)? TIA!
Apologies, I forgot to put that in the post. I’ve just added it. And no, the AAdvantage card won’t have any bearing on whether or not you can get a Premier card.
Thanks Tim!
US Credit Card Guide has a link to a 60k offer, first year AF waived.
Link is still working there
Get an error whenever I try this link.
Yup, looks like it’s dead?
I just got approved for the 75K SUB option thru the link in this article. Thanks Frequent Miler!
Sadly, I’m only seeing a 50k offer, even in incognito.
FYI Citibank seems to have gotten really stingy on approval of Citi AA card. Neither my wife or I have had the card in over 4 years and we have excellent credit. One reason given for my decline was that I have too much open credit relative to the amount being used…
I received a mail offer for 80K for 4k spend in 3 months.
Got the offer twice in the mail lol.
Currently applied for Marriott 5 nights, so not sure if i can hit this spend as well. So I haven’t applied yet.
Offer valid until 6/23 i think.
Hi- if you won’t use the mail offer, are gob willing to share the code with me?
I just applied through the link and got approved. 825 score, $14,200 limit. My last opened card was over a year ago (C1 VX).
I was approved. 740 score. I’ve opened 8 cards in the last year. 3 personal (incl. 1 Citi premier) and 5 business cards from Amex/Chase.
I had a similar denial as those below. Above 800 credit score, only two other Citi cards held, 3 total card applications in the last 6 months, and none with Citi in the last few years. Awaiting denial letter to understand exact reasoning but this does seem to support what others are seeing. I’m certainly not running a balance but I do put plenty of spend on my double cash and custom cash cards. I am outside of their 48 month rule as well. Seems like this card has a different type of customer they are looking for than Citi has historically approved (anyone with a pulse).
Correction to post: 3 confirmed 800+ credit scores–not 880.
Citi seems to be pretty fussy about this card. Declined with 3 confirmed 880+ credit scores. Reasons stated were (i) got one or more cards recently (actually got 1 card 17 months ago), and (ii) credit card balances to credit authorization percentage too low (use credit cards a lot, but “manage” balances to keep them low). In my judgment, two ridiculous reasons, unless Citi wants to admit that it likes customers that carry large balances.
