Quick Thoughts
We’ve seen Amex occasionally offer a 40% transfer bonus to Avios, but 30% is still quite strong and makes some sweet spots a bit more indulgent. For instance, if you can find off-peak business class availability from New York or Boston to Madrid, you would only need to transfer 27,000 Membership Rewards points to Iberia to have more than enough for business class (as that sweet spot costs 34,000 Avios one-way off-peak). See more British Airways and Iberia Avios sweet spots here.
There are plenty of other instances where Avios could make for a strong redemption with this bonus — even for travel to Europe. I recently flew Aer Lingus business class from Washington, DC to Dublin (and onward to Milan). The flight across the pond from Washington to Dublin would have been bookable with about 47,000 Membership Rewards points thanks to this bonus.
I probably wouldn’t speculatively transfer here both because I prefer keeping transferable points flexible and because we sometimes see a higher transfer bonus, but if you are confident that you’ve got some near-term uses in mind, it obviously could make sense to strike while the iron is hot on this bonus. Of course, given that the expiration date isn’t until the end of August, that provides a good window of time to find a use.
