With the sharp increase in interest in outdoor activity since the beginning of the pandemic, I’ve consistently heard good things about AllTrails.com. I haven’t personally used the site much, but our own Stephen Pepper has found some pretty cool hikes as he crosses the country. If you’ve used it and been curious about upgrading to the AllTrails Pro subscription, you can get half off for the next few days.

Quick Thoughts
I don’t know much about the pro version of AllTrails, but the key benefits from the landing page seem to be that you can download maps for offline use (which is obviously helpful when hiking in a wilderness areas}, real-time weather map overlays (which I assume does require cell service), and a real-time tracker that can be set up to automatically alert contacts to your last known location if you’re overdue on your planned finish time (you could surely also share your location with something like Google Maps, but the automatic notification here could be a nice safety enhancement).
Whether or not the features are worth $15 to you is surely a highly personal preference, but half off is coming at a good time for those who would otherwise consider the subscription and who are itching to get outdoors for the spring and summer weather.
H/T: Slickdeals
I just got done using All Trails a few times. I love it. We founds so many great trails and the maps are a huge help. Before getting it we had a not great incident where we took the wrong trail and wasted a couple hours. This has helped prevent that for us. I can’t compare to other apps, but it was a huge help as we went on many trails over spring break.
As a commercial program targeted specifically towards hikers I’m sure AllTrails had some great features (and I’ll probably try the discounted version).
If you’re just looking for offline mapping, however, I recommend maps.me. It has road navigation, like Google maps (although less reliable in my experience) but also does very well with hiking trails. You have to remember to access the area you’ll be hiking in before you’re out of cell / wifi range. But once you have the state or region downloaded you can use the program combined with a gps signal to keep yourself on-route.
