Quick Thoughts
I attended a timeshare vacation ownership presentation from Bluegreen last year. It ran over time a bit, but in the end I got all of the incentives promised immediately (even before the presentation began). You’ll pay $279 up front plus taxes at the hotel where you stay and you have 12 months to book (though you may get an additional incentive for booking it within 30 days).
This is a deal that could easily be worth it for the points alone. While Choice Privileges is far from being my primary or secondary program, I still see plenty of opportunities to get 1c per point or better out of Choice points (a couple of great uses can be for stays in Scandinavia and for stays with Preferred Hotels). Getting 70,000 points for $279 comes out to just under 0.4c per point, which is a great price for Choice Privileges points.
This could also be a solid deal at $279 for 3 nights in some of the included locations. The measure of that deal obviously depends significantly on where and when you’ll travel, but you could nonetheless get a good deal even before considering the points.
If you mentally account for the three night stay and the points as each costing you half the total amount of dollars and cents, this could look like a no-brainer.
However, the unsaid part so far is that you’ll need to give 2 hours of your life to Bluegreen Vacations to try to convince you to buy into their Vacation Ownership program (in my case, the presentation ran for 3 hours before I got firm about ending it then and there). I’m sure that the timeshare / vacation ownership model works for some people, but I imagine that most readers won’t be very interested in locking themselves into an annual maintenance / subscription type fee in perpetuity rather than collecting miles and points for your vacations. Still, keep in mind that some of the salespeople can be convincing and the deals they offer sound better and better as you say no. If you are the type who can be easily convinced, you might want to pass rather than chance that you get talked into something that you shouldn’t. There was a lot of questionable math thrown around during my presentation like comparing future inflation-adjusted guesses at what vacations will cost and saying that you can lock all that in for today’s dollars (ignoring the fact that you’re giving up today’s dollars, which would be worth more in the future if invested, and if you’re paying them interest by financing through them, the numbers start to climb closer together while limiting your choice).
If you do consider this deal, I highly recommend reading the post I wrote about my experience to give you some idea as to what to expect: My experience with a Bluegreen Vacations timeshare presentation.
Also keep in mind that the cancellation policy isn’t particularly customer-friendly, so you’ll want to be firm on your plans.
While I may sound somewhat negative, I’ll say that I would consider taking advantage of this deal if I were eligible (you are not eligible if you have attended a presentation with them in the past 15 months). If you are able to limit the presentation to exactly two hours, I think that it could be pretty easy to come out nicely ahead between the stay and the points. I don’t love their sales tactics because I think the numbers they use can be misleading, but sales pressure was not high at all.
If you have a favorite from the eligible areas, let us know in the comments where people should consider going for this deal.
Even better deal if you get 10x for sticking the $279+tax on your choice card. Doubt it though since they’re not choice properties.
Anyone have any idea what Hotel they book you at in New Orleans?
Hopefully someone knows, but I would expect something like a Residence Inn / Hilton Garden Inn sort of thing. I think there are usually a few options if you don’t want whatever they automatically book you into, but don’t expect full-service brands.
I called and asked the rep. She mentioned the St James, Indigo, and Blake Hotel as three brands they work with but who knows if they are ever “available”.
This will probably be one of the final opportunities for Choice points. Bluegreen was recently bought by Hilton and they are actively trying to get out of the Choice contract
Are there any blackout dates for the hotel night stays e.g. what if I want to use the $279 to stay over memorial Day weekend (assuming room is available for typical normal booking at an inflated rate, can I apply this offer on it without extra fees)
I had no issues booking over holidays in the past.
Great deal IMO
Link not working!
It works for me. Try a different browser maybe? You do need to call to book it.
That did the trick, thanks Nick!
