Quick Thoughts

We have long expected that the Hawaiian Airlines credit cards would not survive the merger with Alaska and launch of Atmos Rewards, but they have continued to hang on despite the odds. We don’t yet know whether they will continue to be available to new applicants beyond the official October 1st merger of the Hawaiian Miles and Atmos Rewards, but it is expected that these cards will continue to persist for existing cardholders for the foreseeable future (and they will continue to earn Atmos Rewards points and Atmos status points).

On top of the redeemable miles earned for spend, these cards earn 1 status point per $3 spent, up to 30,000 status points in 2025 (and I believe the limit is lifted in future years).

It was once possible to get both the Barclays-branded and Bank of Hawaii branded versions of these cards, but that ended many months ago. I don’t think there is any notable advantage to getting the Bank of Hawaii version of the card, particularly since it requires more spend, but if you have had the Barclays version before (but not recently), it might be worth taking a swing at the Bank of Hawaii version I guess, though I would expect your approval odds to be equal with either one.

Whether or not these cards are worth it depends on your excitement over Atmos Rewards. Personally, I am finidng Atmos Rewards points highly valuable for travel to and from Europe. Furthermore, while we know that Alaska intends to maintain its relationship with Bank of America in the future, we don’t know when these Hawaiian cards will disappear. That might make one of them worthwhile to those trying to collect as many Atmos points as possible as it is likely that at some point this path to 80K miles will be gone for good.

Hi Nick,
Please correct the status point earning rate in your post. It’s 1 status point for every $3 spent, not $1:1 point. I did a double-take and imagined a different strategy because of what I learned in the Atmos vs. Aadvantage program showdown from the podcast’s main event 2 weeks ago. Alas, my dream of an easier path to Oneworld Emerald via Alaska’s program with the help of the Hawaiian credit cards went up in the ATMOSphere like a puff of smoke.
