Quick Thoughts
First off, if you’ve never had either of these cards, don’t pursue these upgrade offers.
Amex officially restricts new applicants from getting a new welcome offer on a card if you’ve had that card within your lifetime (in practice, 5-7 years). If you’ve never had these, but then upgrade to them, you’ll then be ineligible for a new card welcome offer on that card that you upgrade to…and the welcome offers for both cards are much more attractive right now than these upgrades. We’ve also heard of some folks being able to get approved for Delta cards even if they’ve already had (or still have) the card that they’re applying for. Your mileage may vary.
Our Reasonable Redemption Values peg Delta SkyMiles at ~1.3 cents each for cardholders (because of the 15% award discount they receive), meaning that these upgrade offers are worth ~$600-750. That could be appealing for folks who are ineligible for the new card welcome offers and/or as an alternative to canceling for those who have an annual fee coming due on the Gold or Platinum cards (assuming there’s no retention offer).
There are probably better ways to spend $3k-$4k (if you’re in the market for a new card), but there are probably at least a couple folks out there for whom these upgrade offers could be tempting.

Any datapoints on what happens with the companion certificate going from Platinum to Reserve?
If my cardmember anniversary is in less than 12 months away, will I forfeit ANY companion cert at renewal next year? Or will I still get reserve companion cert? Or does my cardmember anniversary reset and I’ll receive reserve companion cert 12 months from upgrade date?
Thanks!!
I am in the same situation so had the exact same question, but this is how mine goes:
Have Platinum Business, upgrade offer is to Reserve Business. Opened Platinum last October, so AF hits November 8 this year. I will wait until AF hits on 11/8 so that I can receive the Companion Certificate in my SkyMiles account (probably will take a few days after AF), THEN I will accept upgrade offer to Reserve.
Once upgrading, I would immediately be charged the $650 AF, my $350 Platinum AF would then be refunded (prorated, but should be close to $350 if upgrading a few days after AF), and my Platinum Companion Certificate will remain in my SkyMiles account for a year.
Now, if you’re further away from your AF renewal for your Platinum, good chance the upgrade offer goes away before then so you’d likely have to make a choice between taking the offer and giving up the Companion Certificate for this year.
Bright side is you’d get a new $200 ($250 for Business) Delta Stays credit to use for the rest of 2025, but no new 2500 MQD Headstart (since you presumably got it for the Platinum in 2025 already).
Just wanted to add that these offers are available on Delta Business cards as well. I got the following in my account:
On Delta Business Platinum – Earn 40,000 Delta SkyMiles® and a $200 Statement Credit after spending $10,000 on the Card in the first 6 months of Card Membership
On Delta Business Gold – Upgrade to the Delta SkyMiles® Platinum Business Card to earn 30,000 Bonus Miles and a $100 statement credit after you spend $6,000 in purchases on the Card in the first 6 months of Card Membership
I have the same Platinum Business to Reserve Business offer but interestingly no offer on my Gold Business to Platinum Business
If upgrading to the Reserve, am I wrong that this allow for a SUB without an added credit pull or addition to 5/24? Obviously 35,000 + 300 credit is less than 125,000 but may be worth it depending on how many cards you’ve received lately.
Correct, wouldn’t add a hard pull (AMEX soft pulls after your first card with them anyway), and wouldn’t add to your 5/24 since this is not a “new account” technically
Do you know the deadline for this offer?
RRV for Delta Skymiles is 1.1 cents, no?
In general, yes, but Delta cardholders get a 15% discount on awards, making SkyMiles redemptions cheaper.
I’d also say that an upgrade offer could be attractive to those who don’t want to take up a 5/24 slot. I don’t think I’ll ever burn a spot on a non business Delta credit card, so the upgrade from a Amex delta blue to a plat is actually attractive
Yes, that’s a great point.
I’m seeing a 30k + $100 statement credit offer on the biz gold to biz plat offer as well
Question do we get a new set of benefits with the upgrade or just the difference. For example Platinum offers, 150 Delta Stays Credit but Reserve Offers 200. If we used the 150 already, do we get just the difference or the new credit of 200.
You’ll get a new set of credits from the new card.
