Eagle-eyed Grant of Travel With Grant has caught an interesting development on the Amex Gold card: starting on January 1, 2025, you’ll still earn 4 points per dollar at restaurants worldwide, but only up to a maximum of $50,000 in purchases per calendar year.
This change probably won’t move the needle for most readers as I imagine that most of us aren’t spending north of $50K per year on restaurant purchases. However, for big time dining enthusiasts and/or those who might use their card for a big event like a wedding or other large catering bill, it’s worth knowing about this cap moving forward. Grant caught the following wording on a recent Gold card statement:
Effective January 1, 2025, you will continue to earn 3 additional points (for a total of 4 points) for each dollar of eligible purchases charged at restaurants worldwide now on up to the first $50,000 of these purchases per calendar year.
Keep in mind that if you really needed more than $50K in capacity, it would theoretically be possible to downgrade a Platinum card to have a second Gold card or keep in mind that “restaurants” is one of the eligible categories on the Business Gold card, which offers 4x on the two qualifying categories in which you spend the most each billing cycle up to $150K per year.
[…] an American Express Personal Gold 2025 4x dining cap of $50,000 in July and it’s not news anymore, right? Or is this crazy town? Please don’t answer, I probably won’t like what I […]
Wasn’t this announced back when the refresh of the card was debuted? Edit to add: Indeed it was, I read about it on this great blog I follow 😉

Didn’t we learn this months ago? Why is it news now?
Agreed. This was part of the changes a few months ago when they upped the annual fee and added the Dunkin and Resy credits.
Yeah, but Grant read it.
4x at *US* restaurants with the Business Gold.
Yes. This is an important distinction to make. And this is how AmEx screws their customers. Gold is all restaurants but Business Gold is not? Greedy AmEx…
Well, my local cracker barrell will have to go out of business.
Mine already did, and now I know why.
