Avianca is turning 104 years old and to celebrate they’re running an airfare sale that’s offering up to 85% off. Beware though – you might have to do a lot of digging to find any hidden gems.

- Direct link to offer.
Key Terms

- Valid on flights December 15, 2023 to October 31, 2024.
Quick Thoughts
Celebrating your 104th birthday with an 85% off sale seems a little random, but Tim worked out what happened at Avianca behind the scenes:
“I know, let’s do a sale for our 104th birthday bash! 104% off!”
“Wait, but if we gave people 104% off, I think we’d actually have to pay them”
“Oh, good point. Well, who’s the oldest person you know?”
“Dale in accounting is 85”
“Boom”
It appears that Avianca might be as forgetful as Dale though because it seems like they might’ve forgotten to load the 85% discount into the system.
I ran a bunch of searches to different destinations served by Avianca and none of the prices were at all notable. In fact, when comparing prices from Avianca’s website to those available on other airlines via Google Flights, the other airlines always won out.
For example, the lowest price from Miami to Lima towards the end of January is $203-$210 one-way with Avianca which is a one stop itinerary.
You could, on the other hand, fly for less on a nonstop flight with either Sky Airline or American Airlines.
Similarly, Miami to Bogota is $111.30 with Avianca with one stop:
Why do that though when you can fly nonstop on American Airlines for only $87?
It might be that I got unlucky with all my searches, so if you’re planning on flying to South America in 2024 it’s worth checking this sale in case you have more success than I did.
Avianca…beware. Always.
Also get ready for flights to move around, cancel, fly with a different outsourced carrier etc. Avianca has all sorts of growing pains. This all happen to me on one flight from LAX > BOG, and coming back from BOG > MIA
“But 85% is still a lot. It’s not like we’re made of money here.”
“Oh yeah. Well, 0% is on the way up to 85%.”
“Great idea! We’ll make it one of those ‘up to’ things. Wow you’re smart. We should have you in accounting!”
“Sure, why not.”
“Perfect, I was getting sick of Dale’s s*** anyway.”
“Yeah, f*** Dale.”
I heard Dale hangs his rolls like this
