Thrifty Traveler Premium sent out an alert this morning with Delta business class in lie-flat seats between New York and Bogotá, Colombia for $439 round trip on select dates through December 2021. Upon checking redemption rates at Delta.com, I see the same seats available from 26K Delta SkyMiles and $78.55 round trip — a fantastic mileage rate for business class to South America (and about 1.39c in value per SkyMile). Economy class and Comfort+ rings in at 12K Delta SkyMiles and the same ~$80 in taxes round trip, which yields ~1.36c in value against the cash price. Either is a solid deal whether booking with cash or SkyMiles.

It may be an older Delta 767, but six hours is plenty of time to lay back and catch a nap.

The Deal

  • Delta has lie-flat business class on sale from New York JFK to Bogotá, Colombia from just $439 round trip or 26K SkyMiles + $78.55
  • Economy or Comfort+ is only 12K SkyMiles round trip

Availability

  • Available through June and then again from August to December according to Thrifty Traveler Premium

Quick Thoughts

Any way you slice it, this is a great deal. Lie-flat business class on a route that is about 6 hours each way for $439 round trip is stellar. That price looks to mostly be available for mid-week travel (though I do see some Saturdays in one direction or the other).

And even on days when cash fares are a bit more, the increase in mileage for redemptions is moderate. Here’s a look round trip business class for a select week in November 2021.

And just as we saw during a recent flash sale to Lima, Comfort+ is pricing out the same as Economy class awards. At 12K round trip for either, that is also a terrific deal.

You could alternatively use points like Chase Ultimate Rewards to book. Using Ultimate Rewards at a value of 1.5c each would mean that you would need just over 29K Ultimate Rewards points to pay for these flights in business class — though in the case of Ultimate Rewards, that is an all-in price (including taxes). Any way you slice it, that beats any traditional award option for either economy or business class to/from South America.

It is obviously difficult to predict what the travel situation will be like in December, which is why I would probably lean toward an award redemption if I had Delta SkyMiles — though if you have flight credits to use this is obviously a good use of those as well.
