Quick Thoughts

While the rates for Trip.com aren’t quite as high as some of the rates we’ve seen for other travel sites recently (such as Viator), they’re still far better in many cases than you’ll get through other shopping portals.

Via Capital One Offers, I’m seeing rates of up to 18X miles depending on the type of booking. You can see the full breakdown at the top of this post, although the rates available to you might be different to those that my wife and I have. We only have miles-earning cards, but if you have cashback-earning cards then you’ll see the return as a cashback percentage instead.

You can find Capital One Offers by logging in to your account and scrolling down to the section where it says ‘Activate shopping offers.’ Click on ‘View all offers’ and you should see Trip.com listed towards the top.

Even better rates are available via Capital One Shopping – the shopping portal available to anyone, even if you don’t have any Capital One credit cards. I received an email this morning with the following breakdown:

  • Completed Hotel Stay – 36.5% Rewards
  • Car Rental – 24% Rewards
  • Airport Transfer Booking – 12% Rewards
  • Tours – 12% Rewards
  • Cruise – 9.5% Rewards
  • Completed Flight – 9.5% Rewards
  • Completed Activity and Completed Vacation Package – 6% Rewards
  • Completed Train – 4.5% Rewards
  • Flight China – $1 Rewards

Reader RM shared that he’s seeing the same rates, although past experience suggests that even higher rates might be sent out via email on a targeted basis later in the day, so be sure to check your emails if any Trip.com bookings are on the cards for you.

Bear in mind that with Capital One Offers, the rewards come as transferable miles or straight cashback (based on whether you have miles-earning or cashback-earning cards). With Capital One Shopping, you earn cashback that can only be redeemed for select gift card brands, so that should be taken into account when deciding which of the two types of portal work best for you.

A long shot here but I’ll try anyway: any idea about how getting Swiss Rail passes would categorize? Or would they even work on Trip.com? I have to buy some for the family soon and a rebate would make that a lot easier on the wallet.
