Chase Sapphire Preferred® cardholders might get upgrade offers to Chase Sapphire Reserve®

7

The Chase social media team recently took to Reddit to answer questions that Redditors might have. One of those questions was about getting a bonus for upgrading to a Chase Sapphire Reserve® card and the reply was positive.

Chase Sapphire Preferred to Chase Sapphire Reserve upgrade

The Redditor’s question that presaged this disclosure was as follows:

You have a lot of loyal customers of the preferred card that would like to get the reserve. Please consider letting us upgrade our cards with a bonus.

The Chase reply meanwhile was:

Upgrade offers are coming – stay tuned!

For Sapphire Preferred cardholders who are interested in getting a Sapphire Reserve but who are over 5/24, being able to earn a bonus for upgrading would be welcome news. I’d caution about getting too excited by the prospect though, especially when considering how badly Chase botched the rollout of the Sapphire Reserve’s revamp.

The reply was that upgrade offers are coming, but there’s no kind of timeline offered. While that could mean that they’ll appear in the next week, it could also mean that they’ll appear in a year or two. If you’re keen on getting access to the Sapphire Reserve’s benefits ASAP, it might make sense to just upgrade now rather than hope that you’ll get an upgrade offer sooner rather than later.

That’s if you even get an upgrade offer when Chase rolls them out. They may well decide that they want to offer upgrades on a targeted basis, so there’s no guarantee that you’ll be targeted if/when upgrade offers do go out.

Then even if you are targeted, who knows if it’ll be anything worthwhile. Chase sometimes sends targeted emails to customers with no/low annual fee cards like the old IHG Select and United Gateway cards. Those bonuses have often been in the 5,000-10,000 point/mile range, so minimal at best. I therefore wouldn’t count on Chase offering substantial bonuses for upgrading from the Sapphire Preferred card to the Sapphire Reserve, although perhaps they’ll be a little more generous with non-co-branded cards.

My wife and I are both currently Sapphire Preferred cardholders. If one or both of us received an upgrade offer, it would need to be pretty high to convince me to upgrade given the recently increased $795 annual fee on the card and benefits that we’d struggle to get value from based on our current situation.

The rollout of the new CSR was botched so badly versus the surprisingly good rollout of the new AMEX plat. I bet we see those upgrade offers sooner rather than later.

I’d prefer a downgrade offer from CSR to CSP.

Got 20k just for using Chase Travel offer earlier (Spend $500 on hotel). Thus…

Min spend will be at least 10x that.

So 10 x 20k = 200k points. But since one would save a 5/24, inquiry etc…15% discount. 30k discount

So $cience says:

170k minimum. Anything else I take as a personal insult to my core sense of being!

These bonuses need to be in the 100k – 120K like Amex Platinum upgrade offers to garner any interest.

I highly doubt these Chase upgrade offers are going to be any good

I disagree…i think the 60-80k range will get people who reads these blogs to bite. The $300 travel credit reduces the $800 annual fee down to $500. $500 for 60-80k Chase points plus any other benefits from the card for 1 year? Easy decision

Fuzzy

I’m at 5/24, so no Chase subs in the near term. I might turn down 60k due to the af increase, but 100k is a no brainer.
