Quick Thoughts
Citi frequently runs these types of targeted promotions. This offer was found on a Citi Premier card, but they also target people with similar 5x offers on other types of Citi cards – both those that earn ThankYou points and those that are cobranded (e.g. American Airlines cards).
With similar offers in the past, there was wording stating that you’re limited to earning 2,500 bonus points. That meant it was valid on up to $625 of spend seeing as you’d earn 1x base point and 4x bonus points per dollar in the eligible categories. This time, the wording is a little different. It simply says that you’ll earn 5 ThankYou points per $1 spent up to 2,500 points. That type of wording makes it sound like it’ll therefore only be valid on $500 of spend, but perhaps there’s been no change and it’s just being worded slightly differently.
You might be able to stack this enhanced earning rate with Citi Offers. For example, I suspect that purchases from Newegg would fall under consumer electronics and there are Newegg Citi Offers giving up to 2% back on purchases. While 2% back isn’t amazing, that along with 5x ThankYou points can make a purchase more interesting, especially when combined with shopping portal earnings.

I got an email offering 20x on select online merchants but only until 3/30- it will appear as a statement credit (stores are bloomingdales, allbirds, nike, madewell, boll and branch and the container store)
What weird thing did Citi do this week? I received this offer for 5x TY points on my Citi Strata Premier card, but when I activated it and went to the landing page, it congratulated me and said I’d be getting 5x AAdvantage miles. Not sure which it will actually be. Is this a mistake or a harbinger of TY points becoming transferable to AA miles?
I’m pretty sure Citi’s IT systems are run on an old Commodore 64 with a 1200 baud modem.
I think it’s an error. There was some other error like this recently where people were a promotion said that it was offering ThankYou points to AA cardholders. I suspect they copied and pasted terms from one confirmation page to the next and forgot to update the earning details correctly.
Where was this offer located? I have nothing that remotely looks like that in my Prestige Merchant offers.
Thanks in advance!
This would usually pop up when logging in to your Citi account, rather than it being a Citi Merchant Offer. They also sometimes send an invitation via email or snail mail.
I usually get them in snail mail. I saw in my Informed Delivery earlier this week that I was supposed to be getting a mail piece but 2 days later it has not shown up. But I’ll check out logging into my account per @Stephen’s advice
P2 targeted with 10X. I got 5X. Both have Strata Premieres.
