Delta is running a flash sale on flights to the Caribbean / Latin America / Mexico, with round trip flights starting at 10,000 SkyMiles. The travel period in many cases is during hurricane season and the official travel windows are quite small, so this may not appeal to everyone. On the other hand, if you book with a credit card with decent travel protections, weather may be less of a concern than getting to palm trees and sunshine for relatively few miles.

Quick Thoughts

Again, the travel period in most instances is not the ideal time of year to be traveling to the region, with the fall typically seeing an increase in storm activity in and around the Caribbean Sea.

At the same time, I’ve been to the Caribbean several times during these months and had a great trip each time — and saved a good deal on the cost of lodging thanks to the low season rates that come due to the combination of weather and the return of the school year (which no doubt reduces tourism naturally for the region). I furthermore find that traveling when others aren’t never hurts your chances at an upgrade (on your hotel booking, that is). As noted at the top, I’d recommend booking with a card that carries good travel protections: ultra-premium cards like the Chase Sapphire Reserve or Citi Prestige card may cover up to $500 per person in costs you incur if your flight is sufficiently delayed and/or canceled. See these resources for more detail: Ultra-Premium Credit Card Travel Insurance and When does credit card travel insurance cover award flights?.

According to the sale page, round trips start as low as 11,500 miles, but when I clicked through on the route advertised at that rate (Boston to Nassau, Bahamas), it was available for as few as 10K miles round trip.

You should certainly compare to cash rates to be sure you’re getting a deal. Delta has itineraries available for sale for $290 round trip the same dates (AA is three bucks cheaper). After subtracting the $118 in taxes, you’re basically saving ~$170 by using 10K miles. That’s definitely not bad for a currency that for a time was known as SkyPesos, though neither is it as good as you may get with a premium cabin partner award. It’s worth checking and considering what matters to you — if it’s palm trees and sunshine in September, you may find yourself a deal in this sale.

Flash sales are always a call to check from your local airport since Delta has no award chart and sales from one city pair often mean that other city pairs are also possible beyond the list you’ll find on the promotion page.
