Discover is sending out targeted emails to credit cardholders offering a $20 statement credit when paying two cell phone bills by the end of September. This could be a good deal if you don’t have an expensive cell phone bill, but you might prefer using a more rewarding card and/or one that offers better protection.
The Deal
- Make 2 consecutive recurring cell phone bill charges on your Discover card by September 30, 2019 and get a $20 statement credit.
Key Terms
- Second consecutive payment must be made by September 30, 2019.
Quick Thoughts
This has the potential to be a good deal, especially if you have a low cell phone bill each month seeing as $20 could be a fairly large discount in that situation.
If you have larger cell phone bills though, it might not be worth changing over your payment method. For example, let’s say your monthly bill is $250 (my commiserations). If you paid with a Chase Ink Plus/Ink Cash card, you’d earn 2,500 Ultimate Rewards/$25 after two months seeing as they offer 5x/5%, so you’d be worse off by paying with your Discover card.
Many credit cards now offer cell phone protection when paying your monthly cell phone bill with those cards. If you value the protection that one of those cards offers, getting $20 for paying with your Discover card might not be worth it.
This offer appears to be targeted as I received an email about this offer but my wife didn’t, despite both of us being Discover cardholders.
I made 2 small charges back to back, just like I did with the Chase AT&T offer which definitely pd,
A bit unclear…are you saying that 2 small charges back to back triggered the $20 Discover offer?
Who says you have to pay your entire bill with Discover to get this credit? Schedule two $20 payments a month apart, and my bet is you’ll qualify.
