United is sending out emails to some MileagePlus members offering entry to their Mile Play promotion. Mile Play offers a set of challenges that can earn you bonus miles, so can be pretty rewarding if you’ll be booking a United flight.
The Deal
- Earn bonus United MileagePlus miles with targeted Mile Play promotion.
- Direct link to registration (enter membership number to see if you’re targeted).
Key Terms
- Registration required.
- Only transactions initiated after registration and completed on or prior to May 15, 2019 will qualify toward satisfaction of offer requirements.
Quick Thoughts
Mile Play promotions are a little like IHG’s Accelerate promos where they set you tasks and you earn bonus miles for each one that you complete.
Each set of challenges is targeted, with my wife receiving the following three challenges:
We don’t have any upcoming air travel we need to book, so we probably won’t take advantage of the first task which, incidentally, requires a minimum fare of $175. That’s a fairly good offer though as if she’d flown a fare costing $175, that task is worth 20 bonus miles per dollar.
The Marriott stay isn’t worthwhile for the most part given that we’d be forgoing points, status benefits, up to 10% portal cashback, etc. That said, if she’d completed the first and third tasks, it would be worth considering as a one night stay would then earn not only the 500 bonus miles but also the 4,200 bonus for completing all three challenges. Edit: As George pointed out in the comments below, we’d still earn points, receive elite benefits, etc. through RewardsPlus.
We probably will download the United app and sign in though as that’s an easy 200 miles. Her current miles are due to expire in a couple of months, so hopefully this activity will reset the clock rather than having to transfer in 1,000 Ultimate Rewards.
Offers differ each month, as last month she was targeted for 4,000 bonus miles when booking a flight costing at least $225. Not everyone gets targeted though, as I’m 0/2 the last couple of months. Entering my MileagePlus number at the landing page linked to above gives the following message:
[…] Earn Bonus Miles With United Mile Play Promotion (Targeted Offers) (Expires 5/15/19) […]
Hey I have a question. I purchased a ticket SFO-MEX round trip and rhe total amount was $544 but the receipt shows that airfair is only $394. The rest are airport fees and taxes.. according to the rules the minimum spend needs to be 400. Anyone knows if fare is total value of the ticket or onlu the portion of ticket that says airfare?
Here are the exact terms:
For this promotion, only dollars spent on the “fare” on eligible flights operated by United and United Express® will qualify toward meeting spending milestones. Certain specialty tickets, including but not limited to unpublished, consolidator/bulk, group, tour and opaque fares, will not be counted towards spending milestones. Dollars spent on tickets purchased for flights operated by Star Alliance™ member airline or a United MileagePlus® partner airline with tickets issued by United (ticket number starting with “016”) will not qualify for this offer. The “fare” is the base fare of the ticket plus carrier-imposed surcharges, excluding any government-imposed taxes and surcharges. For tickets purchased in a currency other than U.S. dollars, we will convert the purchase to U.S. dollars using an industry standard exchange rate. Please note that the price displayed when purchasing a ticket on united.com includes up to a 7.5% U.S. Federal Transportation Tax on the base amount of the fare on itineraries wholly within the United States. This tax also applies to certain itineraries between the United States and Canada or Mexico.
It therefore doesn’t look like your fare is quite enough, unless there’s $6+ of carrier-imposed surcharges among the fees.
i think your title should pluralize the first “mile”.
You’re right, thanks – I’ll update that.
You don’t give up elite benefits when you book through RewardsPlus. If you were talking about the difference in benefits between your and your wife’s Marriott accounts, that’s fine… but it’s not how it reads.
You’re right – I’d been misremembering what RewardsPlus involved. That makes the offer much better.
This month’s play for me is dining and one trip for only 4,000 miles if I complete both tasks. Last month play was better where I got 6,000 miles.
