Quick Thoughts
Economy awards to/from Miami and Austin can apparently be had for as low as 12,750 and 18,375 miles respectively + taxes. I wasn’t able to find any awards priced quite that low after doing a number of searches, but there might be routes and dates out there where that’s possible.
In fact, there were slim pickings for any discounted awards between these two cities and Europe, although there are some out there. For example, Miami to Paris can be had for 17,000 miles + $63.30 in taxes and fees.
Austin to Prague meanwhile can be had for 20,000 miles + $82.20. That pricing isn’t bad seeing as people flying to Europe out of Austin will usually have to take some kind of connecting flight to get to their destination.
With past Flying Blue Promo Rewards the 25% discount has often been extended to business class reservations. I’m not sure if that the case this time around though; I couldn’t find a single discounted business class award ticket from neither Miami nor Austin. Most of the business class pricing was simply ludicrous for one-way flights.
As with the economy flight options though, perhaps there are city pairings and dates where it’s possible to find discounted business class award availability.
Stephen, is there an efficient way to search for these besides picking random cities and dates?
There’s the trick to seeing a month-long calendar view on Air France’s website: https://frequentmiler.com/a-trick-for-viewing-the-flying-blue-award-calendar/
If you don’t have any particular European destination in mind though, you’ll just have to pick random cities and see what the pricing is each month for those.
great deal if you can get it! btw, Stephen, I have to get my son home for Easter from LAX to MIA. In your research, what are the lowest economy awards flying domestic in US? Any help would be appreciated.
Spirit has a red eye flights for super cheap.
thanks Jon but I was hoping to use award points…that’s even cheaper lol
April 7 on Spirit for $99, that’s cheaper than miles
thanks Jon, any and all info is good!
It would largely depend on what date he’d need to fly. Wednesday April 5 has some cheap flights on Southwest (~6.5k points one-way), while April 5-8 all have options on American and/or JetBlue for 12,500 miles one-way. All these cheaper options have a layover; award pricing is more expensive for nonstop.
Thanks Stephen, I didn’t know that connections were more points but it makes sense…
