Lyft is trying to encourage you to not drink and drive when celebrating New Year’s Eve tonight (while also encouraging you to use their services, obviously) by offering you $10 of free promo credit when using promo code COUNTDOWN.

Quick Thoughts

I imagine Lyft rides late at night on New Year’s Eve or in the early hours of the morning on New Year’s Day aren’t going to be cheap, so it’s nice to have $10 of free credit to contribute towards that cost.

Having said that, the credit is valid throughout the day, so you might be able to use the credit on a much more reasonably priced ride depending on when you need a lift Lyft. My wife and her mom are going for an early morning parasail and were planning on taking an Uber, but this $10 of free credit means she’ll probably use them in at least one direction.

Be sure to compare fares between Lyft and Uber though because there are sometimes some large price differences between the two services. Also bear in mind that Costco sells Uber gift cards for 20% off every day of the week, so redeeming those could save you even more than the $10 Lyft credit would save you. There have been reports that Uber charges more if you have gift cards loaded to your account; if true, one solution is to pay with a credit card, then load the gift card afterwards and change the payment method to that later on.

To load the COUNTDOWN promo code with Lyft, tap the menu button in the app, then select Rewards. On that screen you should see an option to ‘Add Promo Code’, so tap that and enter COUNTDOWN. I’d do that ASAP if I were you as I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s a limited number of accounts that can load the promo code.

If you’re going out with other people tonight and are planning on car pooling via rideshare services, make sure they load the promo code to their own account so that you can save in both directions.

Don’t forget that you can earn miles or points when taking a Lyft ride. You can’t double dip nowadays, but you can choose between Alaska Airlines, Delta, Hilton and Bilt.
