A couple of weeks ago, GC Galore reported that Home Depot is now selling third party gift cards online. While I’m not aware of any major cards that regularly bonus home improvement spend, this could nonetheless be notable since Home Depot appears to be directly processing the charges for online gift card purchases.
The Deal
- Home Depot recently began selling third party gift cards on its website and it processing the charges directly (which, at least for now, means that some card-linked offers for Home Depot may be triggered with online gift card purchases)
Quick Thoughts
This is mainly notable because Home Depot is directly processing the charges. Many stores outsource the online selling of third party gift cards, offering them through a third party like GiftCardMall or Cashstar (so the third party party is the one that actually processes the charge). For instance, Office Depot sells gift cards online, but those gift cards are really offered through GiftCardMall, so Office Depot doesn’t actually process the charge and therefore buying a gift card through Office Depot’s website will not, for example, trigger a card-linked offer for Office Depot.
On the other hand, there have been positive data points that purchasing third party gift cards through Home Depot has indeed triggered an Amex Offer for Home Depot since Home Depot is processing the charge for the gift cards directly. That in turn should mean that other card-linked offers may also work and there is an outside chance that shopping portal rewards could also be triggered (though I think that Home Depot is already limited in terms of categories available through portals). In the past, we’ve also seen some more general “home improvement” offers, though I haven’t noticed any of those recently.
Note that Stephen reported getting his order attempts cancelled several times, so I don’t know how sensitive they may be or how useful this deal will be, but it’s worth keeping in mind.

Home improvement stores are a 5x category on the Citi Custom Cash. The Choice cards from Wells Fargo also have them.
Also an option for the Bank of America Customized Cash card.
can i use home depot gift cards to purchase other gift cards?
Nope. no known retailers allow that now days… amazon used to be an rare exception, often allowing double stacks… such as getting amazon gift cards at discount and using that to buy 3rd party giftcards also at discount )but they stopped that recently.
We have recently been able to use a Costco gift card to buy other gift cards (e.g. discounted Southwest GC).
Yes Costco is another rare exception. However, I tried to buy a discounted $500 alaska giftcard with $500 costco cash card and order would keep getting canceled for no clear reason… and I’ve done this many times in the past on this account, I finally paid using credit card and order went through… so figured they stopped it too but may be it was a temporary glitch for me.
I had a 5x TYP offer on my Citi Premier from Sep-Nov 2023 that applied to Home Improvement Stores (along with some other stores). Obviously it is not active now, but maybe it will return in the future.
Yep I had the same one this year. Had a similar offer on a Southwest Priority card last year and Home Improvement Stores occasionally come around as a Chase Freedom or Discover rotating quarterly 5X/5% category.
Would the 1.5x bonus category on the Amex Biz Platinum for Construction Materials apply here?
Maybe but if you have Blue Business Plus you’re better off with the 2x.
It looks like Office Depot processes a few gift cards itself, specifically uber, apple, gas cards, and “eats & treats” cards. I stacked a few of these together in a purchase last week using a chase offer on my ink cash plus 10x at the JetBlue shopping portal and 10% at dosh. It definitely seemed like Office Depot processes these specific cards themselves. However, I’m just noticing that my order was canceled. Any one else have experience with this? Is it worth trying again, or will my order get canceled every time?
Those gift cards are only for sale as part of some kind of promo deals (e.g. spend $300 on a new desk and get $20 Uber gift card free), so they can’t be bought as standalone gift cards unfortunately.
