Hyatt has launched a promotion that offers a 15% points rebate on stays at its new portfolio of “glamping” properties: Under Canvas.
Under Canvas’ locations look gorgeous, but there are only 15 of them and they are often a mediocre value for award redemptions. However, getting 15% back makes the pricing much more palatable, and might make it the perfect time to give one a try.

Quick Thoughts
There are only 15 Under Canvas locations around the country, although most are in very desirable environs like Moab, Glacier National Park, Yosemite, etc. If you’re interested in the great outdoors, but nervous about pitching a tent, Under Canvas could be a great option.
The issue is that, although you can redeem World of Hyatt points towards stays at Under Canvas properties, it usually represents average-to-suboptimal value. Hyatt placed Under Canvas under its Mr & Mrs Smith brand, which eschews Hyatt’s award chart for dynamic pricing at a lackluster rate when compared to the cash price.
For example, here’s the cash pricing for a three night stay at the Under Canvas Columbia River Gorge in September:
Meanwhile, here are the costs for points redemptions on those same dates:
Taking into account the additional taxes and fees that would be payable on a cash stay, you’re looking at getting less between 1.2 – 1.6 cents per point of value for an award stay, depending on room type. That’s well below the value we often find at Hyatt’s other properties.
However, this sale make the proposition much, much tastier. If you choose the best value options, the Deluxe Tent or the Suite Tent, your cost goes down to 17,000 pts/night or 24,000 pts/night after factoring in the rebate. Those prices represent ~1.9 cents per point of value, right in the midst of what we would hope to get from Hyatt points.
If you’re like me and “glamping-curious,” this sale could be a great time to give it a go and try one of the Under Canvas properties.

The problem is that these properties continue to offer a mediocre experience to guests at high prices. Just read the reviews. To be “a business,” they’d have to halve their prices and up the “glamp.”

If only the double elite night promo was still going on then there would be an opportunity for a very tasty quadruple stack on Under Canvas promos. Is the Under Canvas brand not performing well i.e. the least profitable? I’m trying to understand why the brand has gotten tons of promo offers this year.
We stayed at the columbia river gorge property. It was great! But the points value on these dynamic Mr and Mrs Smith properties is simply terrible (the cash rates are goofy high). While we enjoyed our stay, we both agreed we’d never do it again because it’s simply not worth 40,000 or even 25,000 points a night when compared to a cat 5-8 Hyatt on the award chart.
I’m certain the majority of savvy customers feel the same way… hence all these promos.
If they want to gin up more business for these properties, all they really need to do is absorb them into the award chart. Suddenly they’ll have an influx of guests who will enjoy, tell friends, and return. Easy!
