(EXPIRED) IHG award sale: 15% off stays of 1-3 nights for cardholders or Platinum/Diamond status

IHG has returned with its somewhat frequent promotion giving 15% off award stays lasting 1-3 nights. This is initially available for cardholders and is now open to those with IHG Platinum or Diamond status as well.

  • This discount offer (“Offer”) is available to those IHG One Rewards members who have a Chase IHG One Rewards Credit Card credit card and who have been granted access to the discount when booking a Reward Night at a participating hotel through an official IHG online reservations site while signed into their IHG One Rewards account. The Offer is for a 15% discount off the number of points needed to book a stay using points only. If using Points & Cash, the 15% discount will be applied to the cash portion of each available option. Quick Thoughts

IHG seems to run this promotion 2-3 times per year and it offers some good savings on short award stays. It’s particularly useful for people who have one of the 40k free night certificates from the old IHG Select credit card. That’s because, unlike certificates from the IHG Premier card, they can’t be topped up with points which means that the hotel you want to book has to charge less than 40,000 points.

This 15% award sale therefore opens up more opportunities to use those certificates as it reduces the number of points required in the first place. For example, the Holiday Inn Express Boston-Quincy was previously charging 47,000 points for a one night stay there next week. Now that there’s a 15% discount, they’re only charging 39,950 points which makes the award pricing just low enough for you to be able to redeem a 40k free night certificate there.

Note that in order to see the discounted pricing you have to be logged in to your account. That’s because the ability to get the discount depends on your cardholder status or elite status. Also note that the booking dates are different depending on those statuses; cardholders have access to this award sale from September 12-16, while Platinum and Diamond members don’t gain access until September 14.
