IHG is running a sale at three of their luxury brands, but the promotion appears to be targeted both in terms of who’s eligible in the first place, as well as the level of discount you’ll receive.
The Deal
- Save up to 30% on stays at Kimpton, InterContinental & Vignette Collection properties.
- Direct link to offer – 30% discount.
- Direct link to offer – 20% discount.
Key Terms
- The Private Member Sale Promotion (the “Promotion”) is valid only for selected bookings on selected dates which are made by IHG One Rewards Members on IHG direct booking channels from March 11, 2024 to March 24, 2024 (both dates inclusive) (“Booking Dates”) for stays at participating InterContinental Hotels & Resorts, Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants, and Vignette Collection branded hotels in North America and the Caribbean using the ‘Private Member Sale’ rate during the Booking Dates.
- The Promotion offers an exclusive private discount specific to each IHG One Rewards member. The member’s unique discount rate will be off of the hotel’s Best Flexible Rate which is a variable, unrestricted, non-qualified, non-discount rate. Rates are per room, per night and are subject to availability during the Stay Dates.
- Valid for stays between March 14, 2024 – June 01, 2024 (both dates inclusive). Booking must be made three (3) days in advance of your check in date and minimum length of stay may be required at select hotels.
- No deposit is required at the time of booking. One night cancellation penalty if cancelled within 3 days of arrival. If you do not arrive at your hotel to check-in on your arrival date, your booking will be cancelled and you will not receive a refund.
- The Promotion is valid in North America and the Caribbean at participating InterContinental Hotels and Resorts, Vignette Collection and Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants. See our website for full details of participating hotels. The Promotional offer is not valid in conjunction with any other offer, discount or promotion.
Quick Thoughts
I’m always suspicious when hotel chains advertise some kind of high headline discount rate like 30%, but in at least some cases this Private Member Sale rate will indeed land you some decent savings; whether or not it’ll be savings of 20% or 30% is another matter.
Speaking of which, the discount rate you’ll receive – if any at all – is targeted. Greg received an email offering 20% off these three luxury IHG brands, while my offer was 30% off. I have Diamond status and I think Greg has Platinum status, so I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s your status level that affects the rate for which you’re targeted. Having Platinum status isn’t a guarantee that you’ll be targeted for this offer though; my wife has Platinum status too but she appears to be qualified for a 0% discount.
For those who are eligible though, there are savings to be had here. For example, when doing a search for the Kimpton Tryon Charlotte, NC, here’s the pricing for just some of the room types with the Private Member Sale 30% discount rate…
…while here’s the pricing for regular members.
As you can see, the Private Member Sale offers notably lower pricing than the Member Discount rate. Having said that, it’s not a 30% difference – it’s more like an 11.5% difference. The reason for that discrepancy is that the 30% discount for the Private Member Sale comes off the Best Flexible Rate, whereas the Member Discount also has some level of discount off the Best Flexible Rate; it’s just not as high. However, it should be noted that the Private Member Sale rate offers free cancellation (up to three days ahead of your stay), while the Member Discount rates are often either entirely non-refundable or the first night is non-refundable.
The discounts you’ll receive can vary from property to property. For example, here’s a selection of a few Kimpton and InterContinental hotels in San Francisco with the Private Member Sale rate applied…
…and here’s their pricing for non-targeted IHG members:
There’s very little difference in pricing for the InterContinental San Francisco, but the Kimpton Hotel Enso is 19% cheaper if you’re targeted for the 30% discount than if you’re not eligible.
Something worth being aware of is that it looks like the Private Member Sale rate only gets displayed the first time you run a search. If you do a revised search after that initial one, the special rate doesn’t seem to stick. That means you need to start from the offer landing page each time when doing subsequent searches which is a bit of a faff, but worth it for the savings.
Seeing as you have to start from that landing page, the best thing to do is to click through from a shopping portal first, then copy and paste the 20% or 30% discount link shared in ‘The Deal’ section into the address bar of your browser. That should ensure that you earn shopping portal rewards in addition to getting the savings from this targeted sale.
For those with Ambassador status who want to redeem their weekend free night certificate, that sadly won’t stack with this sale rate. That’s because the weekend free night offer is its own special rate. If you’re planning on staying at the same InterContinental property for more than two nights though, you could book the weekend free night rate for two nights, then this Private Member Sale rate for the additional nights.
If you’ll be staying before the end of March, you might be able to earn bonus points via this targeted promotion.
20%
I had to look up “faff”
I’m a Diamond / AMB member and my discount is only 20%.
