It can be very difficult to book Lufthansa first class with miles, because they only tend to open up availability to partners around 15 days out. Fortunately on two routes (San Francisco and Los Angeles to Frankfurt) they have released two seats per flight from November 2015 through the end of the schedule in March 2016.
Lufthansa is a member of the Star Alliance and these awards seem to be bookable with any of their partners. The mileage required will vary by partner and most will charge significant fuel surcharges. United is one partner who doesn’t have fuel surcharges. They charge 110,000 miles each-way on this route with $5.60 in fees going and $107.80 in fees coming back.
Since it can be quite difficult to book first class awards on Lufthansa, I expect that there will be a high demand for these seats. If you are considering booking one, it is probably wise to act fast.
