When Citi added Preferred Hotels as a transfer partner at an incredible 1 to 4 transfer ratio (details here) our excitement was muted due to the fact that only a few hotels were actually bookable entirely with points. Now, though, many hotels are bookable with points (212 at the time of this writing). Suddenly, this is exciting. Very exciting!
I’m sure this will be fixed sometime soon, but as I write this, you can’t find points-bookable hotels through the iPrefer website. The page that should show available hotels (found here) simply tells me that it “Failed to fetch.” Bad website. Bad.
The good news is that the Preferred Hotels website works fine. Simply enter your search criteria and click “Find Hotels.” If you leave out your destination, it will bring up all Preferred Hotels. Good website. Good.
Next, click View Rates for any hotel of interest, then pick dates from the availability calendar
Press Continue once you’ve selected dates. The next screen defaults to showing cash rates:
Click the little “Use I Prefer points” check box to switch to the points price:
Finally, in the section where it shows the “I Prefer Reward Nights” click the little “Rate Details” link to see the full cost with taxes. In this example, the full cost for two nights is 200,000 points plus $70.18 in taxes:
I love how the rate details clearly show all taxes due (including resort fees when applicable) and it also clearly shows the cancelation policy. In the example above, you can cancel for free up to 48 hours prior to 4pm on the day of arrival.
I’m working on a number of analyses that I’ll publish in the next few days, but here’s a quick preview of what I’ve found so far:
- While there’s a huge amount of variance from one hotel to another, iPrefer points average around half a cent in value when used as above to pay for a hotel stay. With Citi’s 1 to 4 transfer ratio, that means that it’s easy to get a very respectable 2 cents per point value with your Citi points. I’ve also found a number of examples where you can get much more value than that.
- There is a big overlap between Preferred Hotels bookable with Choice points and Preferred Hotels bookable with iPrefer points, but the overlap is less than I would have guessed. Only 44% of the Preferred Hotels bookable with Choice points are currently bookable with iPrefer points. Where they do overlap, if you’re starting with Citi points, it’s almost always cheaper to transfer to iPrefer at a 1 to 4 rate rather than to Choice at a 1 to 2 rate. I did find some properties, though, where it’s cheaper to transfer points to Choice to book so it’s a good idea to always compare the two booking platforms before transferring points. Here are the hotels where transferring 1 to 2 to Choice is better than 1 to 4 to iPrefer:
- Corso 281
- Excelsior Palace Portofino Coast
- Hacienda Encantada Resort & Residences
- INIALA HARBOUR HOUSE & RESIDENCES
- Palazzo Dama
- The One Palácio da Anunciada
- THE THIEF
Many thanks to @nguoilangthang for tipping us off that Preferred Hotels are now really bookable with points
What hotels are allowing points booking? None that I have checked! Preferred needs to fix this, ASAP! I have tried numerous times for their hotel in Amsterdam. The website always shows availability until the last page and then it shows no rooms! So over Preferred Hotels games! NEVER AGAIN will I deal with this deceptive company.
The Brando for 150k a night is a steal considering 1:4 conversion. Unfortunately I can’t get it to actually price on points. Anyone else have any luck?
How to convert citi or i prefer poi ts to cash voucher?
“Failed to fetch.” Bad website. Bad.
Love your sense of humor. Makes your posts much more readable.
This has been a disaster for me. Just transfered Citi points for a booking and I can’t even book it. No matter what property I try to book, I get this error: Booking Error (501): There was a problem with your reservation. Please double-check your reservation details and try again.
I am still waiting for mine to work. I transferred 150k TYP last Thursday. They instantly showed up as 600k I Prefer, but I can’t book the property I want and neither can the I Prefer reps. I have emailed support a few times. They say they are looking into it.
At this point I want to reverse the transfer. Feels like they’re in violation of t&c. Nothing is bookable.
Transfer from Citi last night and initially got an error on Citi’s site, but noticed points are already taken from my account… I checked my iPrefer account and saw the points were received (instantly). Good thing I didn’t try transferring again.
Booked Villa Copenhagen for 12.5k Citi points (50k iPrefer points) for next Aug. Cash price $485. Choice charges 40k so Preferred Hotel is a better value 🙂
Many Preferred Hotels display “book with I Prefer Points” in their listing in a location search, but that “use I Prefer points” box never appears during the booking process. I found one hotel (Hacienda del Sol) where the box appears for some dates but not for other dates.
Properties can opt-out of point redemptions. This might be one of them. While you can earn points, you can’t redeem. See my comment below regarding using vouchers for these properties.
I am not seeing any 2025 availability for New Orleans properties Monteleone or Bienville. Preferred Hotels is a great redemption when it works.
May have to go back to Hyatt New Orleans properties.
Laissez les bons temps rouler.

Good update, but still buggy.
PSA: There are (still) many iPrefer properties that are not bookable with points. If your heart is set on one of these properties, one must convert program points to a cash redemption voucher and present it to the hotel. Each iPrefer point is worth about 0.2 cpp. With 4X, that’s 0.8 cpp for each Citi point. Pretty rotten. Best of luck.
Has anyone succesfully made an iPrefer points booking after transferring their Citi points? Gary’s comment is concerning…
I was able to do it today. Points transferred immediately. Booking went through without a hitch.
Surprising. My booking still isn’t working. How long ago did you transfer from Citi?
I transferred the points yesterday.

Looks like they’re still not allowing booking of the Cancun hotels with points…
People may want to hold off on transferring from Citi to I Prefer until we know how long it takes to complete the booking process. I transferred from Citi to I Prefer 5 days ago. The points showed up instantly in my I Prefer account, but I still have not been able to complete the booking. I called I Prefer. The CSR attempted to book it for me. She got a “problem authorizing loyalty points” error. It seems that there is some unknown period of time where the points have to sit in your I Prefer account before it is actually possible to make a booking. I emailed the I Prefer support group 5 days ago. Still no response.
This seems to be going on with me too. How is it that no one at this program knows what is going on?
