Quick Thoughts
One of the nice features of this Meijer promotion is that you don’t have to buy in $50 increments – you can max it out by buying just one $500 card if you prefer. The $5 back for every $50 is subsequently loaded to your mPerks card and can be used to reduce the cost of your next grocery shop. If you buy the gift cards before shopping for groceries in the same trip, the $5 rebates will hopefully be available on your card by the time you reach the checkout.
The fact that Amazon, Visa, Mastercard and American Express gift cards are excluded will limit its appeal for some. However, you can still get a 10% discount on eBay, Best Buy, Airbnb, Disney, etc. which isn’t too shabby. That could make this a profitable deal for gift card resellers if you’re able to resell at a high enough rate.
As always, pay for the purchases with a card that earns more at grocery stores. For example, maxing out this deal and paying with an American Express Gold card will earn you 2,000 Membership Rewards.
Another good option will be to use a Chase Hyatt card that’s enrolled in their promotion offering a $25 statement credit when spending $500+ at grocery stores in November or December. Spending the full $500 on gift cards and paying with the Hyatt card would therefore earn you the equivalent of 15% back (10% from mPerks and 5% from Chase).
This offer expires on December 15, so you have almost a month to use it. If you don’t have an immediate need for gift cards, it might be worth waiting a few weeks in case Meijer comes out with additional mPerks rewards or coupons lowering the cost of eligible third party gift cards even further.
