Last night, The Flight Deal reported some awesome fares on JetBlue for travel through the end of December and into early January from Boston to San Juan, Puerto Rico — with fares available almost every day for $23 round trip including seat selection. Alternatively, that costs just 200 TrueBlue points + $11.20 round trip. It’s anybody’s guess as to whether or not travel to Puerto Rico will be advisable in December, but the risk here is low given JetBlue’s current flexible booking policy and these cheap prices.
The Deal
- JetBlue is offering “Blue Extra” fares (which include seat selection) for just $23 round trip from Boston to San Juan, Puerto Rico for travel up through the end of December 2020. Alternatively, these can be booked for 100 TrueBlue points + $5.60 each way
- Search for availability using Google Flights and book at JetBlue.com
Key Terms
- Keep in mind that JetBlue’s policy for new ticket purchases is that tickets purchased by 4/30/20 for travel through 1/4/21 can be changed or cancelled without a fee (cancellations receive a JetBlue Travel Bank credit that is valid for up to 24 months). See the current policy announcements here.
Quick Thoughts
As noted at the top, this pricing is available every month through the end of December.
This obviously isn’t something to use for travel right now and it is very hard to say if and when it will be safe to travel again. However, the risk here is low if you’re booking several months out given that JetBlue is waiving change and cancellation fees for new tickets purchased by April 30th, 2020 for travel up to January 4, 2021. The policy as I read it does not specifically address nor exclude award tickets — so I expect the same applies whether you book a cash or award ticket.
Note though that JetBlue is not offering refunds for voluntary cancellation — if you book and you later choose to cancel, you’ll get a JetBlue credit that is valid for 24 months.
In my case, I booked using TrueBlue points since I have a small pile of them collecting dust (I just don’t fly JetBlue often). It cost me 200 points + $11.20 per passenger for a total of $33.60 for three passengers. I booked it in December.
I am far from certain that I’ll actually take this trip. If you had asked me yesterday if I was interested in booking a trip to Puerto Rico this year, I’d have probably said that I wasn’t in a hurry to book any 2020 travel. In this case, the risk in booking is low because I will not have any trouble cancelling if I don’t feel like it’s safe to go. I figure that in the worst cast, I’ll end up with a $33.60 JetBlue credit that goes unused and I lose thirty-three bucks. In the next worst case scenario, I eventually find a decent use for $33.60 in JetBlue credit over the next two years. In the best case, I spend time on the beach instead of in the snow in December. To me, it’s like buying a lottery ticket with relatively low odds of total loss.
If you do book this, I recommend you closely follow the situation in Puerto Rico in the months leading up to your trip.
Thanks for commenting. I’ve marked this dead.
yup, I saw it an hour ago, but now gone, while I was thinking about it.
gone
Unfortunately, it’s not working for me. I can see these rates available on the JetBlue site, but when I try to book it reverts to around $1500 per round ticket. Perhaps a pricing error that’s being fixed?
