Quick Thoughts

Quill is an online office supply store owned by Staples and, like Staples, sells a number of gift cards online. In addition to third party gift cards, you can buy Visa gift cards up to $300 in value, albeit with purchase fees of ~$9.

Buying a $300 Visa gift card will therefore make you $16 in profit, even before taking into account any points you’ll earn on any credit card(s) where you have this offer. I found it on my Chase Ink Plus card which means that I’ll also earn just over 1,500 Ultimate Rewards points on the purchase seeing as it earns 5x at office supply stores.

As always, it’s worth clicking through from a shopping portal just in case a gift card purchase tracks – here are the current portal rates for Quill.

Update: I wanted to share my experience of buying a gift card with this deal. There was a similar offer a few months ago that I tried taking advantage of, but they seemed to auto-cancel that order. I figured I’d try again with this new offer and so placed an order last night.

I received an email today advising that I needed to call Quill as there was a hold on my order due to an account issue. When calling, I was advised that my order had already been cancelled. The reason given by a couple of different reps is that they can’t sell gift cards on net-30 terms; that was strange because the payment option I selected when ordering was to pay instantly with my credit card rather than being invoiced for the gift card.

They put me through to a Customer Service rep who reinstated my order and processed payment, so the Visa gift card is due to arrive in 6-7 business days.

Something else to note is that you can only order gift cards if you have a business account. That’s as easy as changing the settings in your account from Personal to Business which is what I did the first time I tried to order a few months ago.
