Key Terms
- 200 BONUS POINTS OFFER: Eligible Card Members can earn 200 bonus Marriott Bonvoy points by enrolling in the offer in their online account or in the American Express App by 8/1/24.
-
10,000 BONUS POINTS OFFER: Enrolled eligible Card Members can earn an additional 10,000 bonus Marriott Bonvoy points by using their enrolled Card to spend a minimum of $7,000 in one or more qualifying purchases by 9/21/2024.
- This promotion to earn 200 Marriott Bonvoy bonus points and an additional 10,000 Marriott Bonvoy bonus points is available to eligible U.S. Marriott Bonvoy Boundless®, U.S. Marriott Bonvoy Bold®, and U.S. Marriott Bonvoy Bountiful™ Primary cardmembers with a card issued prior to June 20, 2024 (“eligible cardmembers”). Eligible cardmembers must register for this promotion between July 18 and August 1, 2024, 11:59 PM ET.
- After completing registration for the promotion eligible cardmembers will earn 200 Marriott Bonvoy bonus points for successfully registering their Card in the promotion. Points for registering will be received 8-12 weeks after registration is completed successfully. Fulfillment of the 200 Marriott Bonvoy bonus points upon cardmember enrollment is the sole responsibility of Marriott. The 200 Marriott Bonvoy bonus points will post directly to your Marriott Bonvoy account and will not appear on your Chase credit card statement. If you experience any issues with registering, please contact the number on the back of your card for assistance.
- Please note that even though you have an eligible card, you may not be eligible to register for this offer based on your account status and other factors. To earn 10,000 additional Marriott Bonvoy bonus points, eligible registered cardmembers must have at least $7,000 USD in total purchases posted to the eligible Cardmember’s Marriott Bonvoy Credit Card account from July 18, 2024, through September 21, 2024, 11:59 PM ET.
- Purchases must be posted to your account by the last day of the promotional period to qualify. Sometimes your card will be charged on a date after you make a purchase, and as a result, the purchase may not post to your account until after the last day of the promotional period and will therefore not count towards the $7,000 spend threshold amount.
- Bonus points will appear on your Marriott Bonvoy member account 8-12 weeks after reaching the $7,000 spend threshold.
- Note that the Chase terms say that authorized user spend will count toward the bonus (though an authorized user can not earn the bonus separately from the primary cardmember). Amex will likely only count purchases made by the primary cardmember.
Quick Thoughts
If you have a qualifying card, it’s certainly worth registering any and all of your qualifying cards to pick up the easy 200 points. Whether or not it is worth spending toward the bonus is going to vary considerably based on your situation.
At a base level, most of the qualifying cards earn 2x points on most purchases. Earning 10,000 bonus points on $7,000 in purchases adds another ~1.42 points per dollar spent. If you register and spend exactly $7,000 during the qualification period, you’ll end up with 24,000 points on any of these cards except the Bold card. That’s a return of 3.42 points per dollar spent on any card other than the Bold card, which certainly isn’t bad for otherwise unbonused purchases and represents a rare opportunity to get decent value for spend on a hotel card.
At the same time, you could obviously earn a far more valuable quantity of points with $7,000 in purchases by opening a new card or two. This offer obviously isn’t better than a new card welcome offer. And even at 3.42 points per dollar spent if you do exactly $7,000 in purchases, it’s still not a slam dunk.
It certainly would be more interesting if you are spending toward a big spend bonus like the 50K free night certificate after $15,000 in calendar year spend on a card like the Marriott Bonvoy Bountiful™ Card. If you would otherwise meet that spending requirement, it obviously makes sense to register here and get some extra points in the process.
Purchases on authorized user cards will count towards this, right?
Thanks for the heads up on this offer. I was booked for four nights at the Ritz Carlton Boston. Cancelled and booked through Marriott Vacations with a rental car. I’m saving $300 over my prior cash booking and getting a free rental car through National. The 25K Marriott points will be gravy. Thanks again!
Great post! This is why I am a faithful follower of Frequent Miler and love you guys!
If you’re able to spend exactly $7,000 at gas stations with your Bonvoy Business Amex, that’s 38,000 points, 5.43 pts/$, or 3.8% return (based on FM’s RRV). Not bad if you’re building back a Marriott points stash without opening a new card.
Dud anyone else get the you’ve already enrolled in the promotion, even if you signed up on the first day?
Yep.
Nick—are you sure spend from authorized users counts on the Amex cards? The deal is added through Amex offers, which ordinarily applies to just that specific card. Very different than Chase cards.
I copied and pasted the terms directly from the Marriott landing page. No, I’m not sure beyond a shadow of a doubt, but that’s what it says pretty explicitly. And in this case, I tend to believe it — I think that Marriott is awarding the 10K extra points, not Amex — so I think that Amex (and Chase) are communicating that you’ve registered and I believe Marriott is then just tracking your purchases based on the points that get transferred to Marriott. I don’t think Marriott sees a difference between AU spend and primary cardmember spend. So I think it’ll work here.
Not trying to be argumentative, but I think you copied the Chase terms from the Marriott landing page. The Amex terms on the landing page are actually different. Amex says the spending must be by the basic card member. The Chase terms say spending is by you or an authorized user. Also, I think the 200 enrollment points are coming from Marriott, but the 10,000 bonus points are coming from Amex and Chase. Chase can’t distinguish between basic and authorized users because they all have the same number, while each Amex card has a different number. Amex Offers normally only apply to the specific card number, which is why there are often different Amex Offers for basic and additional cards. Enrollment for Amex cardholders comes through Amex Offers. Very willing to believe I could be wrong, but that’s the way I read it (I also got the offer on both Chase and Marriott cards).
Ah, you’re right! I’ll update.
No ritz card? 🙁
Last year the same offer included Ritz, so pretty disappointing. I tried to register my Ritz card anyway just for fun this year, and it didn’t work.
I received an email for the offer for Amex Bus but not Ritz.
Right — the Ritz card isn’t included in the list of qualifying cards, which you can find under “The Deal” in this post.
