Quick Thoughts
First up: it’s nice to see that they specifically list most legacy Starwood brands as now accepting Marriott gift cards. When I stayed at a legacy Starwood property last fall, they couldn’t yet accept Marriott cards.
This is one of the most popular deals and has repeated for each of the past several years. The Marriott cards usually sell out really quickly — it’s almost like a lottery of refreshing right at 1pm and getting them into your cart.
Still, I like the price of this lottery ticket: free. You only pay if you win. Yeah, yeah — it’s not free because you have to use your time to do it. I’m not sure what you’re doing at 1pm Eastern, but I’m investing 18 seconds of my day in the chance to save a hundred bucks.
Keep in mind the max quantities — if you’re looking to buy more than one, make sure you adjust the quantity right away. There are only two hundred of the $500 GCs available and about two fifty of the $250 cards. Your chances get better on the $100 cards given that there are just over a thousand of them available (for those keeping track at home, that is $236,000 in total purchase price of the available). Still, go in with low expectations and hope for the best. I was able to get one of the bigger cards a couple of years ago and I have my alarm set to remind me to get online for this one today.
Best of luck and may the odds be ever in our favor.
I refreshed and tried all of them in all quantities. Sold out in less than 3 seconds. What the heck?
That’s why I said it’s like a lottery ticket. If a even ten thousand people want something and there are only 200 of it, 98% of people are walking away empty handed. I’d bet there were more people.
I somehow got one.. There’s def lots left but apparently ppl are hitting the sites w/ scripts/bots?
Scripting was the way to go. I was able to create the ‘Buy Now’ button ahead of time in two browsers and clicked both at exactly 1pm Eastern. Got two $500 gift cards (different people, different CCs).
How do I run a script? I did some coding back in high school but if it is fairly simple I’d like to give it a go.
Absolutely without a doubt.
Just sort of a meh deal. If you have an immediate use it would be worth it. Otherwise it’s not worth one’s time.
Given the looming deval of the Prestige 4th night free, I disagree. How else are you going to save 20% on the best (flexible) rate you’ve locked in for a Marriott stay? Stack this with a shopping portal when Marriott is at 10% cash back or more and that seems like a solid deal to me.
There are also plenty of chances to get 20% off on Hotels.com gift cards, but I’d rather book direct for elite credit and points given the discount.
Really, the only time wasted is a minute or so. The potential to save at least $20 (or maybe $100) for the cost of about a minute has to be worthwhile even for a high roller like you. What else are ya gonna do at 1pm Eastern?
Can I make a reservation thru a portal (and get cash back) and use this gift card to pay with later? The email states that the E-gift card will arrive in 10-14 days. I have a planned stay in 3 weeks and would like to book before pricing goes up or rooms sell out. Thanks.
Yes! No need to have your GC to make a reservation. you’ll need a credit card to guarantee your reservation no matter when you make a reservation. Then you just break out the gift card at checkout. Should still get all your portal rewards.
There are Amex offers on Marriott properties pretty frequently with 20% effective discount. You can buy GCs at front desk, no?
Yes though not all properties. Just did the $40/$200 AMEX deal at a local Renaissance by buying a $200 GC. The AMEX deals come at least twice a year. You also get physical gift card instead of e giftcard which I dont like.
Will the purchase be coded as Travel to earn 3x UR points with CSR?
I thought no, but I noticed a little while ago that someone in our Frequent Miler Insiders Facebook Group said one of her recent Daily Getaways purchases did code as travel, so it looks like it may.
Join the discussion…Hi Nick, how do I join the FM Insiders Facebook Group? I looked it up once but I couldn’t find it. I won one of the Marriott Kentucky Derby packages and was going to report on it.
Are these sold by Marriott and if so would qualify for the AMEX Bonvoy Travel credit?
No and no.
This is Daily Getaways – an annual daily-deals event put on by the US Travel Association that runs every year at this time.
Can these be used at hotel restaurants if i don’t stay at the hotel? Or does that depend entirely on whether the restaurant bills as being part of the hotel?
Best case, it depends entirely on the restaurant, but I’m not entirely sure. I’d not bet on it working. I’d call the restaurant and ask if you have something specific in mind.
It says in the T&C that: “Card may not be used for deposit, advance purchase or to secure or confirm a reservation.” that means that it can only be used at checkout to pay for the remaining of the balance if you haven’t prepaid your rate. Because if you have prepaid a room, then it is useless… Am I correct?
Correct. I don’t think any hotel chain allows you to use their gift cards on advance purchase rates.
