Quick Thoughts

IHG has an ongoing offer that gives a 15% discount on award stays at brand new properties. This latest deal is different to that because it’s valid on stays at all IHG properties, subject to award availability.

These sales are particularly useful for those with an IHG Select credit card (no longer available for applications) and those who earned free night certificates as part of a new card’s welcome offer. That’s because those certificates are capped at a specific redemption amount, whereas anniversary free night certificates from IHG Premier and IHG Premier Business cards can be topped up with points if necessary.

For example, let’s say you have an IHG Select card and want to visit Chicago. The Crowne Plaza Chicago West Loop would ordinarily cost 41,000 points in early November, putting it just out of reach of your certificate. Thanks to the 15% discount though, its price drops to 34,850 points which means it’s now bookable with that certificate.

Similarly, a mid-October stay in D.C. would normally cost 44,000 points at the Holiday Inn Washington-Central/White House. The 15% discount reduces that to 37,400 and thus becomes bookable with a 40K capped certificate.

A couple of months ago, the IHG Premier card offered 5x 60K free night certificates as the welcome offer. If you still have some of those, those capped certificates can also be redeemed at even more properties than before.

This 15% award sale, for example, opens up the InterContinental San Francisco in mid-October…

This award sale is already live for IHG cardholders, while it goes live on Friday September 12 for those with Platinum or Diamond status. Reservations have to be made by September 16 for stays through November 18.

IHG used to offer a bigger discount on FL and Caribbean properties for hurricane season (essentially what this time frame covers). I want to say as much as 50% off the points rate at one point.

Now it’s a weak 15% across the board, shortly after points rates were raised by at least that much, as pointed out by Lauren et al.

It appears that IHG increased the points price per night and then “discounted it” 15% to appear as if it is on sale but in fact the discounted points price is still more points than I used 2 nights ago to book the same room at the original rate….
