There are two new Amex Offers out today that can help you save a nice chunk on upcoming Marriott stays. Both are only valid at properties in the US and US territories, Canada, the Caribbean, and Mexico but can nonetheless be worthwhile. Unfortunately, due to the exclusions, I don’t think they will stack naturally.
The Deal
- Two new Amex Offers came out today that are good for various Marriott properties:
- Save $50 on $250 or more on room and room charges at participating Marriott properties in the US and US territories, Canada, the Caribbean, and Mexico from 8/12/21 to 10/12/21 (enrollment required). Note that this offer works at the limited-service properties and some of the mid-tier brands (see more info below and in the offer terms).
- Save $100 on $500 or more or more on room and room charges at participating Marriott properties in the US and US territories, Canada, the Caribbean, and Mexico from 8/12/21 to 10/12/21 (enrollment required). Note that this offer works only at the luxury brands (see more info below and in the offer terms).
Key Terms
- The $50 back on $250 offer excludes Ritz, St. Regis, EDITION, Luxury Collection, W Hotels, JW Marriott, Marriott Vacation Club, Design Hotels, Protea Hotels (which would be geographically excluded anyway), Marriott Executive Apartments, Homes & Villas by Marriott, and Vistana. My first instinct was that it would have been much easier to say where this one is valid, but then I realized that “valid at Courtyard, Delta Hotels, SpringHill Suites, Residence Inn, Renaissance, AC Hotels, Fairfield Inn, TownePlace Suites, Marriott, Aloft, Four Points, Sheraton, Le Meridien, Element Hotels, Autograph Collection and Westin” isn’t much shorter. Marriott needs a brand intervention. The $100 back on $500 offer is valid at Ritz, St. Regis, EDITION, Luxury Collection, W Hotels, and JW Marriott and excludes everything else.
Quick Thoughts
Saving 20% on either $250 or $500 in spend is a nice deal, particularly when you consider that you’ll earn Marriott points on the full spend if you’re paying for room charges. I found both of these offers on an Amex Marriott Bonvoy Business card, so there is additionally the bonus points to be had on that card for Marriott property spend.
I rolled my eyes at the fact that the $100 offer is labeled as “Marriott International Luxury Brands” even though it doesn’t work at international locations outside of Canada, the Caribbean, and Mexico. Still, I bet it will be useful for many people. The $50 back on $250 should be very easy to use.
Both offers say that they exclude gift card purchases. However, historically, gift cards purchased at the front desk of a qualifying property have triggered Amex Offers. YMMV as you never know when that might change. Call around before you waste your time driving to places as lots of properties either don’t sell gift cards or are stocked with employees who don’t know how to sell them. Rather than waste a trip, make sure they have them before you go.
I suspect that many people will find a way to put one of these to use at a Marriott property before 10/12/21 and these will likely be popular offers. Keep in mind that you can’t use gift cards to book advance purchase rates. However, I like to stack savings by going through a shopping portal when I book my room. I may with the gift cards at checkout and then get portal rewards and save some money.
I checked all 5 of my AMEX cards and none of them are offering either Marriott cashback, even the Amex Bonvoy. What am I doing wrong? (I even added like.. 100 of the 500 offfers lol.)
Could I use this offer to prepay for a stay for November?
Anyone successfully used the $50 back on $250 for a gift card purchase at a hotel yet?
These offers have worked on gift cards for years. The minute that stops working you’ll surely see people shouting it from the rooftops and there will be warnings in posts. As long as you’re purchasing at the front desk, you should be fine.
Thanks Nick. That’s was I was thinking, but this comment on DoC gave me pause: https://www.doctorofcredit.com/amex-offers-save-20-at-marriott-properties-with-these-3-offers/#comment-1238796
Still, I agree with you that there probably would be a ton of comments from others if this were true, and I’m guessing this person didn’t do something right, but the fact that he made sure to say “physical” gift cards gives me a tiny bit of pause. I’d love to hear someone confirm it. Then again, I currently have like $1000 in marriott gift cards with no intended purpose, so maybe I should just let this offer pass anyway.
Thanks. Signed up on my Bonvoy card. Question is I still have annual $300 credit to use. If my total bill on my upcoming stay is $400, would I get $50 plus $300 ? Just curious.
Yes.
My wife added both to her Bonvoy Brilliant. Both offers show available for all of my cards, but when I try to add either one, it tells me “Sorry about that! The offer you selected has already been added to one of your Cards.” AMEX confirms it has not been added to any of my accounts, yet it appears my wife adding it to one of her cards is cross-referencing with all of my accounts somehow to prevent me from adding. Never had this happen before.
Any idea if this would stack with the FHR/THC credit on the Amex Plat?
Thanks for the tip. I didn’t see any shopping portals for Marriott currently. Which ones have you seen work in the past?
In the past, I’ve used topcashback, alaska mileage plan, and rakuten portals for Marriott bookings.
Cashbackmonitor shows quite a few portals paying out on Marriott right now:
https://www.cashbackmonitor.com/cashback-store/marriott-hotels-resorts/
In the past, Rakuten has been my preference when they have occasionally had Marriott at 10x. TopCashBack has also often had a good payout. Several airline portals have bonuses for hitting spending thresholds right now, but I’m not sure a hotel booking would trigger them unless you were checking out before the portal promo ended.
Nice. I have an upcoming road trip. I’m two nights away from Titanium and I’m registered for the free night promotion as well. One night in Mobile and two nights in Houston will net me free nights, Titanium and $50 off.
Can these deals be on combined purchases?
Yes they can. Maybe I should read the fine print first…
Can charges for valet and destination fees be used towards the requirement?
Yep. As long as it’s charged to your room folio, it counts towards the spend for the offer. If you pay a parking garage separately rather than at the front desk as part of your hotel bill, that wouldn’t count.
Just in time for my Marriott stay this weekend and my Ritz stay the next weekend!
