United cardholder spending offer: Earn up to $20 TravelBank Cash

2

United frequently runs all kinds of spending offers for its cardholders on a targeted basis. One of the latest offers appears to be for people who haven’t used their card in a while; I got an offer last night that’s giving up to $20 bonus TravelBank Cash when returning to making purchases on my United card, but there are probably other versions of this offer out there too.

United cardholder spending offer

The Deal

  • Some United cardholders are being targeted with a two-tiered spending offer:
    • Make five purchases totaling $500+ in March & earn $10 TravelBank Cash
    • Purchase a $350+ United or United Express flight during March & earn $10 TravelBank Cash
  • Direct link to registration (offer is targeted).

(“Purchases” do not include balance transfers, cash advances, traveler’s checks, foreign currency, money orders, wire transfers or similar cash-like transactions, lottery tickets, casino gaming chips, race track wagers or similar betting transactions, any checks that access your account, interest, unauthorized or fraudulent charges, or fees of any kind, including an annual fee, if applicable.)

    • Only flights purchased with your registered card qualify.
    • Flights on award travel tickets do not qualify for meeting the requirements of this offer.
    • If you cancel your qualifying flight booking prior to the time of fulfillment, you are no longer eligible to earn TravelBank cash associated with this promotional offer.

Quick Thoughts

Earning up to $20 TravelBank Cash isn’t the most compelling offer, but it’s worth checking the registration page anyway to see if you’re targeted. Based on the wording on that generic registration page, it sounds like there might be different types of offers out there, so perhaps I received an offer on the less generous end of things.

I upgraded my United Gateway℠ Card to a United℠ Explorer Card a couple of days ago due to a different targeted promotion. Even though the terms state that “Credit card product changes during the promotional period will forfeit this bonus offer,” I did the product change before registering for this promotion, so I might still be eligible. That said, the email from United refers to my Gateway card rather than my Explorer card, so perhaps it won’t work.

I registered anyway seeing as I’m planning on spending $1,500 on the card in order to earn the 15,000 bonus miles from the upgrade offer. Provided I am still eligible despite the product change, I’d just need to ensure that I do that spending across at least five different transactions to earn the $10 TravelBank Cash.

Something important to be aware of though is that the TravelBank Cash earned from this promotion expires on December 31, 2026. When buying TravelBank Cash normally it’s valid for five years, but this $10 promo amount is much more short-lived (similar to the TravelBank Cash received by IHG Premier cardholders when linking your United and IHG accounts.)

I never see these targeted offers on Chase cards. Neither my wife nor myself had this one.

Better than the semi-annual IHG Premier $25 which is only good for 6 months.
