Quick Thoughts
This is an easy way to boost your MileagePlus balance, although it’ll likely involve having to call to cancel the subscription in a couple of months. My understanding is that California residents are given an option to cancel online, but the rest of us aren’t so lucky.
Make sure you don’t cancel until you’ve had the subscription for at least 45 days. If you’re worried about forgetting to cancel, set a reminder in Google Calendar and have it send you an email towards the end of March.
A similar deal was available a couple of times last year, so if you took advantage of it through the United shopping portal, you won’t be eligible to earn the bonus miles again.
Brutal cancellation process
When are you eligible again for the offer again?
I’m assuming it’s one time only per shopping portal, but hopefully people can contribute data points if they’ve been able to do this deal more than once through the same portal and how long they waited.
Not only do you have to call to cancel, but they aren’t open on Sundays and have limited hours on Saturdays, so DEFINITELY set a calendar reminder to call and cancel several days before your trial expires. My trial ended on a Sunday, so I called first thing Monday morning… and they wouldn’t accept the cancellation, charging me for a month, and actually fought me when I filed a charge-back through my credit card.
Thanks Stephen, I appreciate these posts as it’s another eady way to accrue points. There’s a similar offer for Barron’s AND if you go to Cashback Monitor today you will find that there’s other participants besides United including AA for 1300 points Barclay for 1300 and (my fave) SW for 950, because I use them– not because they offer ridiculous value. For those on the fence. I’ve done the WSJ deal twice (thanks to these notices from FM and DoC) and found the cancellation process to be pretty easy and frictionless– although you do have to call and of course they will try to extend the subscription by offering you a deal– which you may actually find favorable.
Not the worst way to get some additional points in one of your fave FF accounts IMHO…
and then you get some good reading along the way…
I think about doing these, but it’s just not worth the hassle for 1000 points. I did like getting a free 1,000 miles for linking my new United business card to the mpx app,.
