Alaska Mileage Plan is offering a pretty awesome sale on award tickets for travel on Fiji Airways, offering up to 50% off on awards booked by 3/31/22 for travel through 11/30/22. Unfortunately, business class awards are notoriously hard to come by and mostly (if not completely) absent at the moment. Still, if you’re willing to fly in economy class, it’s hard to beat one-way to Australia or the rest of the South Pacific for 20K miles one-way in economy class — with a stopover in Fiji on the way. If you find business class at 40K miles that will be quite a score as well.

Quick Thoughts
Alaska normally charges 27.5K-40K miles each way in economy class or 45K-55K in business class on Fiji Airways to Fiji, Australia, and the South Pacific. This has long been a hot sweet spot since Alaska allows a free stopover on a one-way award ticket — meaning that you can fly to both Fiji and Australia in business class for 55K miles each way under normal circumstances (pending availability).
This deal gets even better since it drops the cost of business class down to just 40K miles each way. Unfortunately, I’m not finding anything available in business class right now. Of course, that could change and you do have through the end of the month to book.
On the other hand, economy class is widely available at just 20K miles each way with this deal. While miles and points have spoiled me into not wanting to sit in economy class for a journey this long, the part of me that has been mostly grounded for two years is itching to take this sale to a far-flung tropical island. I probably won’t be taking advantage of this one, but not for a lack of desire.
You could at least theoretically build some pretty cool trips to far-flung islands here, though your guess is as good as mine as to whether most of the destinations that have historically been served by Fiji Airways will be open to tourists this year. At the very least, Australia has opened to visitors and getting all the way to Australia and back for 40K miles round trip with a stop in Fiji in each direction sure doesn’t sound bad right now.
H/T: One Mile at a Time
Does anyone have experience booking coach with niles and then upgrading with $$ online or at the airport? How much do they charge?
Thank you.
Did u look for Solo ?
I’ve always wondered whether it can make sense to buy 2 or even 3 economy tickets in the same row and stretch out (and sleep) that way. It’s still a pretty good deal for 60K miles. Can it even be done in one person’s name?
On domestic flights, if they don’t have three different Frank Wilson’s actually board the plane, they’ll plug in the gaps with standby’s.
The one caveat I know of is Southwest and their “customer of size” policy, but those have to be booked in a very particular way… I also think they’ll frown upon you doing this to sleep. https://www.southwest.com/html/customer-service/extra-seat/index-pol.html
That being said, given it’s an international trip, there may not be a ton of standby’s and might work, but YMMV
Great thinking my Bus class is 4x my cheap class.I’m tall but saw an aisan lady do 3 seats all the trip.A few were doing it on 4 center seats.
They had this deal in 2020. I was glad to partake. There was plenty of economy availability from LAX/SFO to NAN southbound, with onward award space to CHC (my desired destination). There was essentially no award space northbound, so I used 40k UA miles to get back to America after. When flying to AKL/SYD/BNE/MEL, Fiji Air is often a more budget option due to that extra stop. But if you’re going to CHC/WLG, you need a stop anyway due to no transpacific service.
Of course, NZ south island is awesome. Fiji (the country) is all right. I didn’t like it as much as Hawaii or French Polynesia, but it was a chill 3 day stopover. The prices (rental car, fuel, lodging, food) are fairly low in Fiji.
I’d rather swim than fly Fiji economy
Me too, and I can’t swim.
Just rebooked my NZ/Fiji trip. More than 50% off….yippie!
Yeah, no business class availability means no-go for me. It’s too long of a trip to schlep it in coach, especially if you are flying from the east coast
Agreed. I wouldn’t even fly coach to South Pacific even if I was paid to do so. It’s essentially torture.
