In case you missed yesterday’s news, Bed Bath & Beyond intends to close all of its stores (including Buy Buy Baby), with store closing sales beginning this Wednesday, April 26, 2023. This news has been pretty widely reported, but I thought it was worth a quick post to alert any readers who have been sitting on Bed Bath & Beyond gift cards or merchandise credits that it is time to use them now.

Bed Bath & Beyond gift card

Doctor of Credit reports the following timeline:

  • Bed Bath & Beyond coupons will be accepted through 4/26/23 (use those 20% off coupons or lose them)
  • Gift cards will be accepted through 5/8/23
  • Merchandise credits can be used until 5/15/23.
  • Welcome Rewards can be used until 5/15/23, but you won’t earn any more rewards going forward
  • You can return or exchange purchases made before 4/23/23 until 5/24/23. I take this to mean that all purchases moving forward will be final sale.
  • Store closing sales will start on 4/26/23.

Again, my understanding is that this will affect both Bed Bath & Beyond and Buy Buy Baby stores. I wouldn’t expect these stores to remain on shopping portals for long for those shopping online.

Personally, I’m a little disappointed. The stores in my vicinity had already closed, but Bed Bath & Beyond was occasionally useful for Visa Gift Card purchases years ago. Furthermore, as a deal hunter, I prefer more competition over less. Even though Bed Bath & Beyond prices were often inflated, there were occasionally good deals to be had as well as the convenience of physical locations when one needed something right away.

I noted above that Buy Buy Baby stores are also slated to close, but keep in mind that Bed Bath & Beyond stated that they will be trying to find a buyer for all or part of the company and will pivot away from store closings if they find one. While I can’t imagine they’ll find a buyer for the core business, I’d be a little surprised if nobody comes for the Buy Buy Baby business. Time will tell. That said, I wouldn’t expect old gift cards to continue to be honored beyond the deadlines above — so I recommend using them before you lose them.

All gift cards/ merchandise credit/ rewards were to be used by may 8, 2023 after that they get zeroed out

Thank you so much for this! I didn’t realize this impacted Buy Buy Baby. We had given our daughter a BBB gift card as a Christmas gift and she was waiting until they moved back to the US to use it. If you had not written this, she would have lost hundreds of dollars. As soon as I read your post, I contacted her and we placed an order within hours. You saved the day. Thank you!

lauren

They won’t accept my gift card or store credit. The store told me everything stopped on the 8th! I tried calling corporate. They should honor it for more than 2 weeks after blindsiding the customers. The card says you can use it at Christmas Tree Shops but that is not true anymore either because that partnership ended apparently years ago.

Kim

I am so sorry Lauren. I am thankful I received the Frequent Miler email and I had enough time to react. I feel terrible for everyone who is left with unusable gift cards.

Erin

Just realized I had a $50 GC in my stack and now I can’t use it! I totally missed the announcement too.

Deb

Just found a $75 GC and I tried to call the 800# to discuss the actual cutoff date of 5/8/23; is so wrong. The money is already in their profits. We should get our merchandise then… The customers are never their first priority..

I think this is awful. You can still buy merchandise on line but it will not let you use gift cards. I had no idea they were closing. I been dealing with cancer and I don’t have cable for the news. Now I am left with useless gift cards my son had gotten me. You should be able to use them until there is no merchandise. They were paid for and should be honored.
