OK, this offer will have niche appeal, but if you’re a soccer fan who’ll be in New York City next Friday then this could be a fun experience.

American Express Brighton
Brighton & Hove Albion and Newcastle United – two English Premier League teams – will be playing at the Red Bull Arena in Harrison, NJ on Friday July 28, 2023. To celebrate that, American Express will be setting up the Amex 1901 Pub at the Oculus Beer Garden which is near the World Trade Center.

From 3pm-7pm you’ll get to enjoy the following:

  • Drinks named after Brighton players and sing along with a pub band
  • Pub games, photo opps, and giveaways in celebration of the most successful season in club history
  • Card Members will receive a complimentary drink, and will also get their train fare covered as they head from the nearby World Trade Center PATH station to Red Bull Arena in Harrison, NJ.

Note that this is a pre-season game rather than an official Premier League match, but it should be a fun experience nonetheless. Brighton and Newcastle both had great seasons last year and so the quality should be high, albeit with players trying not to get injured ahead of the Premier League kickoff a couple of weeks later.

If you’re wondering why Amex would choose to set up a pub before a match between these two teams, it’s because they have a longstanding connection with Brighton. The American Express headquarters in the UK is in Brighton and it’s one of the largest employers in the city – if not the largest employer. They’re also the sponsor of Brighton & Hove Albion’s ground – the American Express Community Stadium – so it’s not surprising that they’d choose to support them over here too. Although I’m a Liverpool fan, we lived in Brighton for two years before moving to the US. We loved it there, so the city has a soft spot in my heart and so it’s a shame that I won’t be able to make it to this game myself.

I’m curious what the drinks named after Brighton players will be. I had a quick think and here’s what I came up with:

  • Solly Marchgarita
  • Odeluga Offiahball
  • Maker’s Marc Leonard
  • Danny Wel-Beck’s
  • Joël Veltmanhattan
  • João Pedrosé
  • Jeremy (whiskey) Sourmiento
  • Lewis Dunkin’ Donuts coffee
  • Tariq Long Island Iced Lamptey
  • Adam Shaken Not Websterred
  • Kaoru Mojitoma

Anyone have any better suggestions?

Can’t believe you missed James Milnegroni as a fellow Liverpool supporter

IAD_Flyer

Can I get a drink for every NLL Biz Plat CC I have? 🙂

Philip

Would this require a US amex card specifically? Wondering if Canadian cards would work.

Sinosoul

As a Brighton fan on the West Coast I’m SUPER annoyed by this.

Carlos Danger

Wouldn’t your annoyance be with the club for not scheduling a match proximate to you during its US tour?

Lantean

Did you expect them to schedule a match in every town where they have a fan?

Paul

If only there was a website that could help you figure out how to travel and catch them on the east coast…
