Quick Thoughts
inKind has had a number of Amex Offers and other discounts over the past couple of years. I ignored it for a while, but then finally signed up and have enjoyed the couple of chances I’ve had to use it.
For those unaware, inKind is a payment app. Participating restaurants allow you to settle your restaurant tab within the app, eliminating the need to give your credit card to the server (and wait for them to return with it). I was skeptical as to how useful this would be, but I’ve used it a couple of times now thanks to generous promotions and I’ve found it really easy to use and really convenient to simply type the check number into the app and settle the bill without any wait time.
The drawback is of course that you’re limited to the restaurants that offer the ability to pay via inKind. They certainly aren’t everywhere, though the footprint seems to be growing. I’ve used it at Chef José Andrés’s Jaleo DC and Michelin-starred Grammercy Tavern in New York City and in some other cities as well. They’ve even got options in some smaller cities (there are a couple of options in the Capital Region of New York State, which is close enough to home that I could use it now and then). I’ve also gotten targeted for some good promotions now and then.
I don’t need more inKind credit right now, but if I had an imminent reservation at a restaurant that takes it, I’d probably be buying a gift card here to save 40% even if it means missing out on a restaurant category bonus.

Last week, Inkind added 7 rewards to my account – rewards are incentives for specific local/national restaurants (e.g., $30 off $50+ spend at Brio/Bravo/Bertuccis or $50 of $150+ spend at Yardbird etc.).
At Brio, 3 of us including another inkind member who had the same deal ate at Brio where we each had a 3 course meal for $25 each and some soft drinks – after splitting the bill so both inkind members could apply their reward, our combined total was a little over $40 plus tip.
Currently inkind is also offering upto 45% discount on their website. I am buying $2000 to use for my rehearsal dinner
Also, my Amex gold card gave me 4x points when I used inkind to pay at an restaurant. So hoping purchasing the $2000 from their website will also give me 8000 points
It’s not a 45% discount, it’s a 45% bonus which works out to about 31% discount
You are so right. I read it wrong. You just saved me tons of $$$
Great deal but I would only buy if you plan to use it in the next couple of weeks. InKind has to be hemorrhaging cash with regular deals like this and 20% cash back.
I can’t say for sure, but based on my understanding of how their business model works, I don’t think they’re hemorrhaging cash. Certainly not discouraging you from exercising due caution, and in the beginning I wondered whether they would last long enough for me to get a chance to use the credit I bought because I sort of assumed the same as you. I’m no longer very concerned about that. Don’t get me wrong — I wouldn’t stock up on thousands in gift cards for anything like this, but my read is that it’s unlikely that they’re in the kind of situation you’re describing.
They offer themselves to restaurants as a form of financing. Presumably they are basically purchasing F&B credit from the restaurants at a discounted rate by providing money up front and providing an alternative to the restaurants over traditional loans or selling equity. Otherwise I have no idea how they can sustain these promotions and discounts.

Based on their model, they would likely have to have a significant number of their partner restaurants go under to end up with a cash flow issue.
They basically pre purchase a certain amount of food from restaurants that are looking for an immediate inflow of cash.
sounds like a fairly sweet deal as long as the restaurants continue operations.
we have a fairly lengthy list of them in my area.
I frequent a wing and pizza place that has great food.
Too bad there are only a couple of participation locations where I live
What is your source for the notion that a discount starts 1-29? Some circular? Another blog?
Doctor of Credit. I had the link copied to add the hat tip and just forgot to paste it in. I’ve updated with that, thanks.
If you pay with an InKind gift card, do you get the 20% credit as well?
no
No, you don’t. My fault — I was updating and republishing our old post about this and I missed that mention. You only get the 20% back when using a credit card to pay.
Just to clarify…it’s 20% if you have the InKind Pass subscription ($9.99 per month or $100 for the year) and 15% back for everyone else when paid with credit card.
Are you sure about that. I clicked through the sites direct link to the deal and the way I read it you do get 20% back after using your E gift card. I was surprised by that, but I thought the language was pretty clear.
Lot of sites talking about Inkind….no one has a link showing participating locations. Useless for me.
You just go to InKind.com and scroll down a little and there’s a map search right on their home page.
Does this mean you can only get FIVE referrals, 5 forms of payment, or is it something else???

Costco only allows Costco members to buy up to 5 gift cards per member. The post is about a deal to buy a gift card at Costco, so the terms are related to the Costco deal, not InKind.
Thanks, Nick
Finally had a chance to use InKind on a trip to ABQ. Seamless to use and the banked credits bought at a discount plus the app offers for additional discounts made it a very cost effective meal. Just wish it had more presence where we live!
Yeah, I feel the same way — surprisingly seamless / easy, just wish it had more of a footprint.
Yep, the additional in app promotions are great!
does inkind work for takout order?
Yes!
Can you use InKind credits to pay the tip also?
No, you can’t. You have to use a credit card for tip.
Sure you used it and enjoyed it, using refferal
credits. Free is good.
Does the overage on the restaurant bill show up as a 4x restaurant bonus on AmEx Gold or does it show up as a 1x from InKind?
4x
Mt orders keep getting cancelled.
Keep in mind you can’t stack it with the $50 off $150 for InKind Pass members
yes you can
