Update 5/28/25: Capital One Shopping has again removed a ton of useful gift card redemption options…over 30 in total. I (Tim) am now seeing only 42 possible redemptions in my account, and many useful ones are gone, including Lowes, Home Depot, ebay, Instacart, CVS, Ace Hardware and hotels.com. Unlike last month, this appears to be affecting most, if not all, Capital One Shopping customers. If anyone still has access, we’d love to hear from you.
~~~ Original Post Follows ~~~
Capital One Shopping is a public shopping portal (no Capital One credit card required) that offers rewards dollars that can only be redeemed for gift cards to select merchants. Over time, they have offered some broadly useful merchants like Walmart, Kroger, Safeway/Albertsons/Vons/etc, DoorDash, GrubHub, and Uber Eats among others. Sadly, none of the merchants in that sentence are available anymore (each having been removed at different times, some returning for a time and disappearing again). While I have long been willing to mostly look past the limitation of only being able to redeem rewards for gift cards, it’s been really frustrating to see high turnover in the redemption options over time.
Quick Thoughts
A reader reached out today to say that they thought that ebay gift cards had been removed as a redemption option. Thankfully, that doesn’t appear to be correct (I still see ebay among the gift card redemption options), but it was nonetheless a good reminder to publish a post about which options have been removed and which remain.
For many, redemption options like Kroger, Safeway, and Walmart made the utility of the rewards earned through Capital One Shopping almost as good as cash. Portal rewards are never quite the same as cash given the delay in payouts and if you’re using gift cards at Kroger or Safeway, you’re missing out on earning a bonus category for that spend. Still, given the monster payouts frequently offered by Capital One Shopping, it has been easy enough to overlook the limitation of gift cards.
However, given the loss of popular redemption options noted in the first paragraph, some readers might think twice about whether they want to collect portal rewards through Capital One Shopping given the uncertainty of redemption options.
Personally, I’m still happy to use Capital One Shopping. Just yesterday, I got offers like 35.5% back at Get Your Guide, up to 36% back at Expedia (usually good for tours and activities), 40% back at Klook, 15% back at Vrbo, 25% back at Agoda, 15.5% back at IHG, and many more. The payouts tend to be enough higher than what I see elsewhere that I’m confident I will get enough value out of the rewards even with a more limited set of redemption partners. However, that won’t necessarily work out for everyone.
Out of the redemption options available at the time of writing, I would say that the most broadly useful and/or relevant to travel are:
ebayLowe’sHome DepotInstacartHotels.comCelebrity Cruises
Personally, I’m still happy to redeem for Hotels.com and I’ll surely have occasional uses with other merchants. For instance, I buy stuff from L.L. Bean from time to time and don’t otherwise see their gift cards discounted. I’ll buy a holiday gift from Bass Pro Shops now and then, etc. Still, you’ll want to more closely track the redemption options if you don’t find the gift card options as useful.
looks like every time you get a gift card that option is no longer availble next time you want to redeem, its insane lol, i used victoria secrets 2 weeks back , now is gone, used adidas last week now is gone , this is sooo annoying!!!
Lost Barnes and Noble, Lowe’s and Home Depot. My friend still has them, which does me no good. Also, used eBay CB offers for large and small auction wins last month, activated and paid through eBay checkout using Capital One Shopping app. Took pics. The small purchases populated to my CB purchases list. Not the big ones. Emailed support. They responded it’s the vendor responsibility to process and report eligible purchases back. I responded back that it’s a bait and switch offer system. C1 responded, not our problem. I declare shenanigans!
I just got Ace Hardware, Chubbies, Yankee Candle and Barnes Noble added. I have never had Ace hardware in my 3 years
Those of you that have chewy and ebay can you post the last part of the redemption address (example B155604)? https://capitaloneshopping.com/gift-card-checkout/B155604 maybe we can still access them by that even though they don’t show up on some of our pages. I use Chewy and Ebay and they aren’t on my page anymore.
I checked this morning for the first time in a few weeks and many of the options that were gone are back. Specifically I see REI, Ace, Home Depot, Lowes, Ulta, eBay. I have a number of pending credits so I hope some of these stick around long enough for me to redeem them.
can you post the last part of the ebay redemption web address. It will be a letter and 6 digits mine all B###### maybe we can access through that web address
Just to add , neither me nor my husband have eBay at the moment
Yes, I have been loving Capital One Shopping and using it religiously. But I noticed my husbnad’s account has 85=4 gift card redemption options and mine has less than 40. Back to Rakuten. Cash is king.
I have about $1600 in rewards and went to go redeem my usual ebay cards but saw ebay is missing from redemptions, and the available redemptions are largely useless to me, just being for niche overpriced stuff. Feels really bad. Hopefully the lawsuits don’t actually go through because then I’d probably lose all my $$$ with them since their T&S probably say rewards have no cash value.
I have used my COS rewards exclusively for Chewy for the past year (ish?). As of this morning when I stopped by, they have disappeared. This is exclusively how I pay for my litter and cat food. I’m shocked and crushed. I’ll be honest, having used no other gift card options, I did not realize that they could change/disappear. I am so bummed about this. I see that PetCo has been added. I’m about to head over and compare prices. But, yeah. What a bummer. I am not interested/cannot use any of the other options.
Same here. I was cashing out for a Chewy Gift Card this morning and saw that the option had disappeared. Capital One Shopping is about worthless to me now.
Me and my wife both have accounts, each with about $100 credit. One account has way more gift card availability than the other. For example DSW only appears on one. The other account has very limited choices. So availability is Targeted, which is sleezy
Holy shady-ness! I have two accounts, one for myself and one for my wife. My wife’s account only has $43 in rewards, I have hundreds. Her account has Lowe’s, eBay and other good retail options. My account is very limited. Absolute scheisters!
All of the quality sites that I have been purchasing from are still gone for me – Home Depot, Macys, Sephora, etc. I am certainly not interested in buying hundreds of dollars in gift cards for Hot Topic and Popcorn Factory…. here’s to hoping something good comes back soon to try to cash out as much as I can. Super disappointing, as me and my parents have really found a ton of utility out of Cap One Shopping with travel and new home purchases.
Hey, just writing as another data point that my options just heavily changed yet again. eBay and Chewy both went away, after multiple redemptions from me recently. Seems that more went away as well, as there’s fewer rows, but I don’t know what else did.
Interestingly, Lowes was gone and is now back.
Looks like some more crummy options got added, like Hot Topic. 20 years ago me would’ve been ecstatic at that option 🙂
Just seems like everything is heavily in flux at the moment and very YMMV. I have nearly $1,000 about to post, so may just cash it out for Lowes and Petco to grab that before it too leaves.
Really hoping some combo of Albertsons, Walmart, or eBay comes back. Surely it will after I cash everything out…
The option is limited, but based on the article and comments it seem as if these stores comes and goes at times. I will wait to see if ebay or Walmart comes back.
confirm: CVS is back!
