Update: Hertz has changed the terms of this promotion, requiring a minimum rental of 3 days within the US and Canada. Read more about this here.
The other day, we wrote about a promotion being offered between SAS Airlines and Hertz rental car whereby you can earn 5,000 SAS miles per Hertz rental. See that post and the links there for the full scoop. Essentially, we showed how it appears possible to rent cars for as little as about $20 for one day and collect 5,000 miles per rental. It’s a promotion that seems a little too good to be true, and the way the terms are written inspires some doubt as to whether or not it will be honored as advertised. Unfortunately, since the terms state that bonus miles will not be posted until after October 5th, we won’t know for more than six months whether or not they make good on the miles.
However, I’m happy to report that I picked up my first rental through the promotion yesterday and I got a nice indication that this promotion might work out. On pick up, I asked the agent if they could confirm that my frequent flyer number was on the rental. Not only did the agent confirm that, but he proactively mentioned that he could see I was getting 5,000 bonus points for this rental.”. Bingo! I hadn’t mentioned the promotion and I didn’t get the impression that he was familiar with it.
Does this mean Hertz and SAS will each hold up their ends and honor the promotion? We still don’t know. But the fact that the agent could see the bonus included in my reservation is a promising sign. I think I’ll be taking the gamble and making a few more reservations — with the understanding that it may still require some followup come October.
[…] Update on 5k Mile SAS + Hertz Rental Car: The honeymoon stage. I picked up my first car of the promotion and there was good news to report: The agent at pick-up proactively mentioned that he saw I would be earning 5,000 miles with this rental. The promotion showed in the system — excellent! Things were heating up. […]
Update: Hertz has changed the terms and instituted a 3-day minimum rental in the US and Canada. I posted an update here:

Do the miles credit if I don’t pick up the car?
Do you have any legal repercussions if they do not honor the bonus? I only ask because I’m thinking of going deep for a trip next year. Somewhere close to $800 in rentals.
@Tennessee Next year? That makes no sense.
How does that not make sense? I’m hoping to get credited point in October of 2017 for a trip I want to take in 2018.

Where do you enter your SAS number on the reservation?
Did u put ebb the the number or just the number? Thx
I didn’t see a space in which to enter it–just the promo and bonus codes.
I’m mobile right now (just picked up second rental), but when I’m stationary, I’ll add screen shots. There’s a place near checkout to add it. My final receipt from first rental shows my Eurobonus number.
Thanks! I’ve gone through the process up to the “review and submit” phase and can’t see where to add my number.
Still not on a desktop, but I tried using the full site on my phone and I see it seems to hide the FF# field if you are not logged into your Hertz account. Choose “Book as a member” and log in. Then, FF# field is under where you can choose to enter arrival by flight info. If you’re not a Hertz rewards member, sign up first.
Thanks!
Hi Terry — good question. I don’t know. I put the full thing including EBB.
