Quick Thoughts
When I saw this Amex Offer on my accounts, I was initially dismissive. The last time I checked out Living Social was a year or two ago and the place was a wasteland. There were about half a dozen local deals and that was it.
We’re currently visiting Myrtle Beach SC, so I had a look on Living Social to see if there were any deals and was surprised to see a ton of them. Even more surprising was the fact that they had exactly the same deals as Groupon and even seemed to have the same layout.
What I’d forgotten was that Groupon bought Living Social in 2016. It therefore looks like all the offers you can find on Groupon are now on Living Social and vice versa. The $5 statement credit (or 500 Membership Rewards) can therefore be a 20% discount on a wide range of already discounted activities.
Don’t forget to go through a cashback or miles portal. There’s currently a higher rate through several airline portals – 9 miles with American Airlines, 8 miles with United, 6 miles with Alaska, etc. If you’re a new Living Social customer, you might prefer to use a site like Top Cashback that’s offering 15%. I just went to cashback monitor and only saw 3 miles for American into miles per dollar for United how can I get eight and 9 miles per dollar ???
Unfortunately it looks like the rate has dropped since I wrote the post – there had been an increased rate of 9% for 6 days up until today. That appears to be a rare rate – https://www.cashbackmonitor.com/cashback-store/living-social/best-rate-history/ suggests that 6 miles (through the British Airways portal) is the norm.
In Phoenix, Livings Social has the same old offers just about every day, every week, every year. You’re in luck if you need an oil change or a day at the spa. That’s about it.
Note that LS runs site-wide 20% off sales several times every week, so you can stack that under the Amex $5 offer.
I recently bought a Groupon for horseback riding between Phoenix and Tucson, so there are some deals that will appeal to travellers. The same in San Diego and the Florida Keys. And some cities still do have a couple of decent restaurants that participate in Groupon (and, thus, Living Social). The key is to buy when there’s a save 20% coupon (they run this at least once a week, usually for a day or two) and also use a cashback site. If your Voucher is under $25, you can do the Stockpile deal for about $8 (you just have to cumulatively spend $25). You’ll get $20 in stock, which you can sell for about $18 with a little rigmarole (there are instructions at doctor of credit, I think).
