Recently, Aer Lingus announced a new route from Montreal to Dublin, Ireland beginning service on August 8, 2019 that makes for a nice sweet spot on the British Airways award chart, ringing in at just 37.5K Avios in business class or 12.5K Avios in economy class.
Sweet spot spotlight:
- The short story: British Airways only charges 37,500 Avios in business class or 12,500 miles in economy class during peak times for flights under 3,000 miles. The Aer Lingus route from Montreal to Dublin measures in at 2,973 miles, making for a great deal on flat bed transatlantic business class.
- Miles required: 37,500 British Airways Avios in business class / 12,500 British Airways Avios in economy class
- How to find awards: Search Avios.com or United.com
- How to book awards: Call British Airways
Quick Notes
The new Montreal-to-Dublin route rings in just under the 3,000-mile “Zone 4” band, making for the following one-way award prices:
- Economy off-peak: 10K Avios
- Economy peak: 12.5K Avios
- Business off-peak: 31,250 Avios
- Business peak: 37,500 Avios
Theoretically, the Boston-to-Dublin route (2,993 miles in distance) should also be in Zone 4, but a few years ago British Airways decided to begin charging (higher) Zone 5 prices for flights on that route. Unlike that route, British Airways is not (yet) charging Zone 5 award pricing on the Montreal-to-Dublin route. This makes the Montreal flights a stellar deal in terms of miles – especially when there is a Current point transfer bonus.
H/T: One Mile at a Time
I could not find any flights at all on Aer Lingus, BA, Google Flights, or any other place for a direct Montreal-Dublin flight. It appears this route is dead. 🙁
There don’t appear to be any Aer Lingus direct flights on the AL flight schedules now; only via LON or BOS. Occasional Lufthansa direct flights.
[…] Use BA Avios to fly Aer Lingus from Montreal to Dublin for only 12.5K economy or 37.5K business clas… […]
Blogs should stop talking about this sweet spot or it will get devalued.. Do you just use this as an exucuse to write a new post and therefore display more ads ??
dublin is on an island in the middle of the atlantic, thus not TATL, it’s sub-TATL
it isn’t really in the middle of the Atlantic; It is on the eastern edge. East of Ireland is the Irish Sea.
Just got the Aer Lingus Avios bonus. Can I transfer AL Avios to BA Avios?
Yes. Use your Aer Lingus AerClub log-on credentials to log in here: https://www.avios.com/us/en_us/my-account/combine-my-avios
According this chart on the Aer Lingus site, it doesn’t look like they plan to keep it this way https://www.aerlingus.com/media/pdfs/EI_routes_avios_amounts.pdf
That’s if you’re booking with Aer Lingus Avios. This post outlines booking with British Airways Avios, which is pricing out as shown in the post for the time being.
Thanks for commenting — I just realized that the beginning of the post referred to the Aer Lingus award chart even though the “Spotlight” section in the middle laid out that you would need to book via British Airways. I’ve updated and clarified it as this is a British Airways Avios sweet spot. Thanks again!
How much are the fuel scamcharges?
I was quoted 140CAD roundtrip (110USD). Mostly Canadian airport taxes.
As Geo indicates below, they are low.
Also if you wanted to visit UK (England) think you can save by flying on Avios to CDG cheaply feom Dublin and take Chunnel in and avoid the insane UK ADT and taxes and save a bundle that way as well
